What brand of dv you're using? I uses a JVC and Panasonic DV without any problem. I heard that studiodv have problem with sony dv, correct me if I'm wrong.
I don't use firewire "capture" card, just plain firewire card. If you just want to capture, you can use a program (freeware) call Windv. Windv download
Are you sure you have the right driver for your firewire card?

I am using Panasonic 3ccd nv-gs200 dv and magic-pro combo1 usb2.0 and 1394A plain firewire card, after installation, the device driver is OHCl Complaint IEEE 1394 host adapter and without any exclamation mark(windows says it is working normally.)
I'm using the PV-GS70 (similar to NV-GS70 but with smaller CCD), American model.
I don't have problem even with Studiodv version 7. Maybe your DV is newer model is not detected by Winxp? I'm not too sure. Have you tried to connect your dv to other computer with a known working firewire card?
NV-GS200 is a very nice dv. Thumbs up.
