buy pioneer, it supports dvd-rw,
multi-system tuner,
nicam,
ilink i/o.
i don't recommend panasonic because it just supports dvd ram, dvd-r. there are not many dvd player can plays dvd ram. you need to write it to dvd-r if you want to play the recorded video on other player.

Any recommendation or user experience to share?
I'm also confining my choices to Pioneer, Pansonic and Toshiba. Also I prefer those HD recorders but I'm afraid the tuning quality of Pionner may not be as good as Panasonic or Toshiba. However, size of HD for Pioneer can be as high as 160GB which is very attractive.
Yes I think I'll wait for a while as I just found out from the web that Toshiba has released some models which can record 2 different channels at the same time. That is great but I doubt how long it will take before they have the PAL version.
As usual, price is much cheaper for their Japnanese Model:
RD-XS43
250GB
only Yen 68,500 from internet shop or HKD4,900
RD-XS53
320GB
only Yen 78,500 from internet shop or HKD5,600
There were some bugs in the software and their operation is not user friendly as well.
Agreed that those HD models are bit expensive as the large size HDDs are basically at very cheap costs. However, if you look at their prices in Japan or US, those 160G models are only HK$4,xxx but they are marked up to HK$6,xxx in HK.
If you really need one now, go for the cheap models of either Panasonic, Pionner or Toshiba.
Spare your money to buy another one in 2 or 3 years time for those large HDD with digital signals as HKTV will definitely move to digital world by then.
