The byproduct of cellular respiration is carbon dioxide, which reacts with the limestone. If the limestone dissolves or changes shape then it means carbon dioxide is present, and it could only be present when a living thing is breathing e.g. The mealworm. When the mealworm inhales, air gets drawn in, so the coloured ink marker moves closer to the boiling tube.
