I'm nearly 43 and I had just done my 6th IVF. Two eggs extracted are both fertilized and on Day 3 they are both B+, one is 9-cell, another one is 10-cell. But today Day 5 one embryo still remains at Day 3 10-cell, another one is at Day 4 "compacting?". The lab said they will wait till tomorrow Day 6 to see if they can turn to blastocyst, otherwise they both can't be used. My question is, shall we ET or freeze the eggs on Day 3 as I'm already high age, or anyway we shall wait to see if the embryos can be developed to Day 5? Thank you very much.
Hello cutecutetown,
I have done eggs extraction recently in QM, this is my first IVF treatment.
I am 30 and initial basal follicles were about 5+8=13.
However after gonal -f treatment, 225iu for 10 days I have only 7 follicles and finally only 2 eggs were obtained only.
After 2 days incubation, 2 eggs are not fertilised and therefore no embryo. Prof asked me to repeat again after 2 cycles of menstruation with a higher gonal- f dorage to 300iu and also said higher than 300iu dorage would not help any more.
1) I am wondering why I was not advised to used icsi as he said my husband’s sperm should be normal with morphology =4% and activity is good. Should I request him to use icsi instead in next ivf?
2) And in this case, the eggs cannot be fertilised naturally turn out would be a genetic problem in my eggs?
3) Egg cannot be fertilise, it is because my egg quality is poor? What can I do to improve? And if I do 2nd ivf after 2 cycles, it should be the same lot of eggs with poor quality?
4) In my case, even the number of follicles is not very low, but mostly are empty follicles, it is a problem happening in my ovary?
Hello kabakhor,
This is your 6th IVF; I would definitely culture the embryo(s) to blastocysts. It does not matter how good-looking an embryo is on day 3 if it cannot grow to a blastocyst. If it does not grow in the dish, it does not grow inside your womb either. Do not give yourself false hope.
Also a note on blastocysts. Day 5 and day 6 blastocysts have god potential to give babies, although day5 gives a slightly higher live birth rate compared to day6 if the embryo is not PGT-tested.
