To all parents on this website, please take time to read this post if you believe learning English is important for your child.

Question: Why do parents in Hong Kong like their children's English teachers to have be Caucasian, preferably with blonde hair and blue eyes????

When parents meet their child's NET (Native English Teacher) at the school, they feel a sense of relief when the teacher is a "foreigner". Somehow this a guarantee that the standard of teaching and the level of English is going to be impeccable. In my opinion, this misconception may be one of the reasons why the level of English in Hong Kong is not improving, but deteriorating.

Without generalising too much, not all "foreigners" have good English skills. Furthermore, being a "foreigner" does not guarantee that he/she knows how to teach English effectively, especially English as a second language. I've even heard or seen cases where the teacher is not even from an English-speaking country!! Italian, French, German, Dutch people are hired to teach English because of their physical appearance, regardless of their accents. They are chosen over Chinese (ABC's, BBC's, CBC's etc.) just because of the image! This is ridiculous that this is still happening in the 21st Century. Wake up, Hong Kong! We are now in an era where there are many returnees from the U.S., U.K., Canada etc. who have English and teaching skills. We may not look "foreign" but I believe we understand more about the Asian attitude to learning, what second language learners are thinking when it comes to language acquistion.... what's more, our English is as good if not better than a lot of Caucasians.

The irony is that if returnees' English is sub-standard to that of a true "foreigner", then why are so many parents sending their children overseas to study? Are we always going to be second-class citizens compared to foreigners?

Signed,
Dismayed but proud to be Chinese.

I don't think parents only judge the net teachers by their appearance. Many parents nowadays can speak fluent English and know where is the standard of the teacher up to once they start a conversation.

We, as parents, cannot tell who is ABC, BBC, CBC or returnee unless the teacher's accent gives a significant hint. I don't really understand why you are posting such a long complaint here, it will be for the school to hire competent teachers, not the parents...
