it depends on which schools. there're good and bad public schools and private schools.
but in general, i think the peers in private schools might be better than those in public schools unless the public schools are in good school districts.
also, the teacher:students ratio is definitely lower in private schools.
for public schools, u can always check their API scores to find out their academic performance. however, the API scores for private schools are not published, so you'll need to look for parental referrals/recommendations and reviews, and blue-ribbon, best award from local area parents, etc.
since public schools are free, most parents send their kids to public schools (especially if they have more than one kids).
private high schools would cost approximately $10,000 to $30,000 a year. if you have 2 kids going to private schools, you would need to double up the tuitions.
also, private schools reserve the rights to accept/reject anybody even though you can afford the tuition and don't mind to pay for it.
however, public schools have to let the kids in as long as you live in that school district.
