Planning to immigrate to Toronto

Hello everybody!

Few years ago, I lived in Toronto for 3 months(Winter) and had born my baby. Now, I am staying, studying and working in HK.

My husband and I are planning to immigrate to Toronto around few years later. But I am worried that it is not easy for me to handle because my husband will back to HK and work in HK. Kindly share your valuable opinions to me.

1. What is your 1st home? Is Apartment better?
2. Which month is the good target for children to appy the school?
3. How long you need for settle down?
4. Is it easy to find a job if I am a HK social worker or in business management field?

:-P :-P :-P

Do you or your husband have the PR status or already citizen? I came to Toronto with my two daughters in 1999, my husband stayed in China to work still now. I can tell you, it will be a very hard time for the family to be apart - - - depending on the trusting and love. Your husband must be the type who will not go wrong, do you understand what I mean.

1) If you and your child stay here only, it will be much much better to live in condo - - - the type of apartment that have security guard 24 hrs - - - any visitors (both walk in/ or drive car) will be questioned by the guard and ask for the apartment number he is visiting, then will call the resident to confirm before letting him in. Apartment without security guard is still not too safe, as people goes in/out freely.

2) Schools start to register for new students for next term usually 1 or 2 months before summer holidays, but you can still go to register anytime of the year. If you are applying for Catholic school, parent or child need to be baptised already. School will accept child who live in their area only (but not for private school - they accept student living far away, as you pay for school fee).

3. this depends on each individual. i survive till now with my husband in China. we arrived sep 1999, got our own home feb 2000. then i could say we already settle down - as daily life goes on the same each day.

4. i can say it is not so easy to find your first job - related to what you are doing currently, or even quite difficult to find your first job of any type. i am lucky to find a job within 1 month, but not as Exe. secretary as what i am doing in hk. i am a claim clerk in a company - working till now and this is the only one reply that i received. i had sent over 100 applications, applying for whatever related - jr. sec., clerk, customer service, coordinator, personal assistant - whatever posts related to an office. 99% saying that you have no canadian experience (i call and ask them myself). this is really a stupid system - - i immigrate to canada as experienced worker (exe. sec.), but now saying that i have no experience. if not even one employed me, then how can i get canadian experience. so you need to prepare to work in a different field and do whatever is offered as the first job to gain that sort of canadian experience, then you can try to switch job. i am lazy to find another better one because this one is close to my daughters's school and home (within 10 min drive). i think it is more important to be easy reached if anything happened.

Re: Planning to immigrate to Toronto

Dear ckkwkl,

Good morning! Many thanks for your advises. I understand what you mean. Heard that some unexpected and upset stories when family are apart into two counties. This is one important point that we should concern.....

1) If you and your child stay here only, it will be much much better to live in condo
* Thx and agreed! I lived in Condo near Lesile(冇記錯好似有間叫"金皇朝"之類嘅酒樓) before. My relative in Toronto agreed also because no need to remove snow in Winter.

2) Schools start to register for new students for next term usually 1 or 2 months before summer holidays
* Thx and noted!

3) this depends on each individual. i survive till now with my husband in China.
* Thx and noted!

4) i can say it is not so easy to find your first job
* Thx and noted! I belived that you have well experience because you are Exec. Sec in HK. Something we get but something we lost. Now in HK, the Finance environment is changed to better but it doesn't compare with 10 years before. Tomorrow will be better! Enjoy our life!

Re: Planning to immigrate to Toronto

HI ckkwkl,

You must be a tough lady and I admire you very much!
sorry about out of the topic, but it just made me think it is worth to migrate.

I believe you have a good job in HK and making much more than here. Yes, I agree life is very different here as we have not extra money to have so much entertainment. But now you have apart from your husband and if you have a second chance will you say "NO" to migrate?

I never thought to migrate to overseas until I met my husband and the reason I came here because of him. He is an english native speaker and he cannot get a career in HK, so I have no choice except to leave.

In here we all struggle as we cannot afford to have a maid. We rush to drop off and pick up our child and go back to work, prepare meal everyday and do shopping during weekend. We seems work less hrs and make similar money in HK, but after taxes, we lost most of it. We barely have spare money to travel overseas as each year we need to buy the RRSP, RESP, mortgage and insurance. At the end, we dont have spare money to spend.
Now my concern is, do our kids really benefit from that? If I have spare money, I can send them to different classes and buy different learning materials. I can see from my previous landlord, her 2 daughters are all born and bought up here, she said they dont have the talent that HK people has. Although they both speak fluent Cantonese, they just like a typical Canadian. I dont mean Canadian are bad, but my landlord said there is something missing which we can only find from HK's kids.

This is just my thought.

Re: Planning to immigrate to Toronto

xother

thanks for your kind word. i was not used to be a tough woman, but have to be right now. i rely on my husband for everything from the first day i met him, but starting from the day i arrived here, i had to be independent as my children rely on me. we may have taken the wrong choice, but no road to go back.

you are right, i earned much more in hk than here, about $30000/mth at that time. i only earn 1/3 (net) now, all savings had been used up. if you ask me, i will insist that my husband to come and stay together in 1999, we have no more saving now, we cannot take the risk of no income for months or even years. At that time we can still take the risk of him not finding any job for a few years. we decide to migrate is mainly for the children - i do not really trust the chinese communist - if they have two passports - they can decide for their future, stay or go. i can say we do not have any spare money to spend, every penny is used up each month and on the girls (their only activities is piano lesson and dance lesson ($40 each month for elder one) + chinese class). they had asked for more, but i really can't afford. i am lucky that my sisters-in-law will send parcel for them - new clothings, prettry accessories etc., or even paid for our trip to hk for vacations. so i save up the spending for this. my life is boring here, no entertaining at all - home-office-home/ or just grocery shopping / and surfing on internet and online games.

i think the only way that we can go back to live in hk is when i become the grand prize winner of lottery only, so buying $2 each game. my husband says he may have a higher income now, so we are planning and hoping to save money - - - enough for the expense for a certain time - then he can come back - if cannot find a job, then even part-time for both of us is ok. have rice eat rice, hv congee eat congee.

agree with your landlord's opinion - something is missing from the children here than those grow up in hk, i think this is because the children in hk has a lot of school works and activities + the fast paces of lives, their brains turn much faster than kids of here. however, my girls are not like those typical CBC - but i can say turning to be more and more - they have their own likings - artists/singers (whom i even don't know who they are), like to watch those soap drama show on tv (which i have never sat and watched for 5 min).

Re: Planning to immigrate to Toronto

HI ckkwkl,
Thank you for your sharing and I can feel the pain from you! Life is very different in HK and yes, I agree the kids who brought up here are different from HK. It just you deal with "gwailo" and you understand their brains do not run as fast as us.

You are such a great mom as you really sacrify for your kids. Imagine if you have such salary plus your husband aside, you will have a great life in HK and having a maid to work for you. Your kids will benefit more as they can attend different classes to fulfil their interest.

How about the kids? Do they miss daddy? How often your husband around you? I dont think I can manage by myself without my husband around. I thought Toronto has better opportunities for jobs, has he ever consider to reunion with you guys?

I dont want to be selfish, but what is the aim of our life? I want to live happily with all my family members and having a decent income. There is no guarantee the kids are better if they bought up in Canada or the education is better than Asian. My landlord's daughters are all grown up and start working. I dont see they have a great life because of their background. It just like a typical university graduate who look for job. But one thing I will say Asian are very concern the academic result and most Asian kids will finish university compare many "gwailo" kids drop out but pick it up later in their life.

the kids do miss their dad. however, we do msn and phone call everyday. we know, this is not enough. he had missed a lot about them.

we are planning to reunion again, saving up as much as possible. we have zero balance in bank, even we do not eat - the kids need to; and we still have mortage, insurance etc. all sort of bills to pay each month. my salary is definitely not enough. even if he can find a job here, but the pay won't be good enough. so we need to have something in bank to survive for a certain time first. then he can start searching for jobs; and even we can do part-time in addition. agree with you life is not easy in canada.

i have been with him for more than 23 years, more than half of my life. being apart is not what we want, but what can i say - life or fate.
