Thanks for your reply. My brother wants to remit money to my account through Paypal. He says that it should be free of charge if I accept US$. So I wonder why you said that "aypal charge is very HIGH". I also checked from Paypal website: https://www.paypal.com/ and it also said that it is free of charge. Can you tell me whether the website is correct? If so, what are the charges for? Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Oh, JeffB, if your brother send you, say, USD100 to your paypal account. When you get the fund, paypal will charge you about 4.4% (different rate for different currency) before putting to your account. That means, you will get about USD95.6. Thus, NO charge to the sender only. I usually deal with AUD, the rate is about 3.6-3.8%.
Besides, the rate for USD to HKD is about 7.5 only! If you do not need to withdraw to your HK bank account, that's fine. Otherwise, it is something like extra charges.
It seems that the charge is quite expansive if my brother remits US$1,000 to me. The charge is US$1,000x7.8x4.4%=HK$343. Am I right?
Anyway, can you advise me how can I register at Paypal? Should I just register at the website? Is it safe? Besides, you said that there will be extra charges if I withdraw money from a HK bank account. Then how and where can I withdraw the money from my Paypal account so as to avoid the extra charge?
JeffB, sorry for making you confusing. I have just confirmed the updated rate. Paypal charge is about 3.5%. Let's take an example:
If I send you USD1,000 to your Paypal, you will get about USD965 (after deducting the 3.5% charges). That means, your papal account will have USD965 balance. If you withdraw it from Paypal and transfer it to your local bank account, you may only get HKD7334 (USD965*7.6) as the rate for exchanging USD to HKD via Paypal is only ~7.6!!
So, the total charge is (USD1000*7.8) - HKD7334 = ~HKD466.
If you want to register as a Paypal member, just do it on the internet, there is NO problem. No worry. I have used paypal for over 1.5 years, no problem at all (touchwood).
Thanks for your reply. It seems that the charges are higher than a local bank. It seems that it is easier and cheaper if I receive a US$ cheque and then cash it at a local bank.
