We went to Japan for 10 days in mid July, extremely exhaused, never believe it could be so hard though I know many people say that, and esp. my baby grows up suddenly and learns more and starts walking so he moves around all places and the hotel rooms, feeling very excited and can sleep only 30 min in daytime and 12:00 at night (totally differs from the schedule in HK). So we are very tired, need to take care of him every minutes and can't do any shopping (or one by one) or eating.

Bring:

Water, they said mixing the one you bring from HK to the water there (not distilled one).

More milk powder, sometimes they are tired (and you as well) so it is better/quicker for them to have milk than solid food.

Biscuits/bread/juice/water for when he feels boring esp. and very hot these days in Japan.

Medicine from doctor (but I need too as I got sick twice as it is really too tired)

"Sun oil", sun glasses, hat (very sunny and hot or heavy rain in mid July), washing/sterilzing pills for milk bottles, his toys/books...actually one & a half lugguage boxes are filled with his stuff.

Sb. gives me a hand band for sea/flight silk (can bought in watson in Airport, not sure), as his daugter feels bad and vomit. Better let your baby drink/eat sth. when the aircraft is going up/landing (for sake of the ears) and let them sleep during the 4~5 hrs (not easy, haha). And I can bring my pot storing hot water and milk powder by hand carry in HK & Japan ah.

When you do bookings yourself for hotel, ask for baby bed (even they said it is for 1 yr old, you can let your baby stay in for a while if it is safe and keep close to your bed, as sometimes both of us need to do sth & leave him alone for a while), baby accessories like bath tub, and ask for double room...tell them you have a baby, they normally arrange a bigger room.

momo627 - haha, I am actually waiting for your feedback on your Japan trip. I have read it on the other thread. My hubby and I spend our holiday in Japan at least once a year, but after my baby comes to this world, we do not go to Japan anymore. I suggest to go there to spend our holiday with our little boy, but my husband said "NO" because he told me exactly what you wrote. He said until our boy is 2-3 years old, then we can bring him travel. It means I cannot go out at least for the year ahead.

oh, really? I seldom come to BK now as many 0906 mammys chats at fb.

So you want to go but your hb says no? Or you can bring your parents or maid or friends to help. It is extremely tired as he grows up suddenly (unexpected) and no sleeping, refuse to have solid food as I said, now he can walk by holding my hands so he insists walking around the farm or hotel room or shops or shopping arcade and we can't do shopping or eating what we want.

See my itnerary for my 10 days trip:
Day 1: arrival, have sushi
Day 2: go to isetan, only shop on baby shops floor, no time to see our clothes, and have 2 meals (i mean my baby) there, we are too tired and buy take away at isetan basement
Day 3: Go to Daikanyama, finally buy clothes for us and have sushi
Day 4: Got serious flu, sleep whole day (me) and my hb is really poor, needs to take care of him alone, but even both of us can't control him, esp. his safety.
Day 5: Take flight to Hokkaido. We rent a car when we arrive the airport & return when we leaves to HK. We arrive at night, very cool. 15 deg. cel. at night, so I don't go out and have fast food take away again
Day 6, 7, 8 & 9: Much better, we drive to Furano, Biei, Otaru. As we had been there b4, ok that we can only visit 1 or 2 farm a day. And we can feed him at the farm (shop selling melons) and inside the car, and he can sleep in the car though we have long driving hrs. We have crabs in wet market at Otaru..but he cries when I have my 1st crab legs...so I hurry up and take away the rest. But I get sick on th 6th day again, really really exhausted and tired..
Day 10: Fly to Tokyo then HK.

Actually, if only you 2 go with your baby, super hard, unless he/she has constant eating and sleeping habit, but they are too excited so they may not sleep (mine sleep only 30 min in daytime, and sleeps at 12:00 midnight HK hr, ie. 01:00 Japan time, but wake up at 8:30 am), and we need to clean bottles every day, pack our stuff after he falls asleep.....really harder than I expected, though my friends remind me.

But 1 thing is good, so as other mammys who went to Japan in July also, our babies explore their views and see more interesting things they have never seen, they are happy always and try to touch those Japanese girls to greet friends and say hello. He can't walk but crawl and do a few things (slower progress than other babies), he grows up faster, learning more that I didn't expected and can dare to take risk and walk around, I do think he is super happy and he learns more than staying at home (restricted in a small area), we can't do the same even we have playgrounds at weekends. You can tell this to your hb.

Try have a shorter trip so that you can handle easily. If you want to go to Tokyo, 4 or 5 days so that you won't feel too tired, yet have time to shopping (or shopping one by one). Baby clothes and shoes are lovely there.

And if you like Hokkadio, it is good and more comfortable as compared with going shopping in Tokyo, as he can walk around the farm to see the beautiful flowers.

I do put down my horrible trip in my blog (so you read my blog or in other thread in BK?) and some sharings in fb (not sure if we are friends in fb because of BK name). Sorry for saying too much but I didn't do this in BK as I am worry if people find it annoying reading the long stories.

Me too, going to Japan even twice a year, or more, as we only have short holidays, and I don't like Thailand (only interested in Spa), Taiwan (I don't like eating) or Korea (nothing interesting except for skiign); and yes, same as you, repeat asking my hb to go to Japan when he is one, so when it was so tough in that 10 days, and I got sick twice, we quarrel ga.

He told me exactly what you wrote<--you mean I say very tired taking care of the baby? I do agree it is better to take him there when he is 2-3 years old, as my friends do, as the kids can eat "adult food" and they can walk and behave well (he knows what he is doing) and he can remember what he has visited......haha, but 2 to 3 yrs are too long la......esp. for our case, right?

The best choice is having your maid or parents to go (but pay more, but worths, though I didn't believe b4 I go), or leave your baby in HK and let your relatives to take care of him, just take short trip lor. If no one can take care of him, try my suggestion having 4 or 5 days trip to Tokyo or going to Hokkadio that babies can see the countryside (my hb loves this idea and he propose this, as he doesn't like shopping). Tell your hb BK mammys have experience taking their babies to Japan, Canda, China, US....and an 1 yr old babies can feel "happy" when seeing new things and he really learns much more in these 10 days ga. But if he is worry about the effect of aircraft to babies brain or safety reason, then go by 2 of you la, or he may blame you in the future.

This is solely my opinion, see if it suits your case la.

Sorry for my "long tongue". Let me know if you really go and have holiday.

Btw, though last time we said we will never bring him out again as it is too tired, we will go to Tokyo this Sat for 4 days to celebrate my birthday, haha. So, even those 4 days are hard, you won't remember how hard it is when you look back.

Cheers.

Totally agree with momo627. I also had a 14-day trip to tokyo and hokkaido this July. This was also our 1st trip with my 13-month old baby. It was a memorable experience. Luckily, we got my parent and parent-in-law together for the trip and they helped to take care of the baby if needed.

You have to prepared that you can't arrange too many activites and places to visit during the trip (as it is impossible, better 1 in morning and 1 in afternoon, if possible, back to hotel between each for rest for both you and your baby) and the place you visit shall taken into consideration of baby suitability (i.e. safety).

One thing has to mention is your baby has to take shower in the bath tub (need 2 to do this) during the trip and baby will not used to this and cry. You have to prepared for this.

We also drive in hokkaido and baby used to sleep during the drive. I don't know the situation will be if taking JR. Also, the place for eating shall also be well planned. For example, you better not to eat at those small rest. as they may not be able to provide seat for the baby or a good environment. The food must also be eatable for baby (i.e. rice, noodle and not all raw stuff).

We took many solid food to japan for baby's lunch and dinner. But finally, my baby ate less of these solid food and she wanted to eat what we ate. Of course, we have to surrender. My baby use to eat breast feed at morning and before sleep but she rejected to eat at last few days. Now she doesn't eat breast feed anymore and change to eat milk powder.

Same as momo627, I'm happy to see my baby has grown up and learn more after the trip.

Though I think she has already has less/no memory of this trip, but we took many photos for her to see in future and this memory will last forever in my mind.

Actually we have already planned to Japan東北 this Oct. This is also a challenge as weather at that time will be cold.

BTW, most of our hotels has hot water pot. But we have bring a portable heater with a small pan for making food for baby.

My experience, baby can drink japan water, distilled water, bottled water but for sake of baby to adapt NEW water, we take a 1L bottle of HK boiled water during the trip to mix with japan water.

You are most welcome la. Many mammys remind me I must bring our boiled water from HK (remember not hand carry ah).

Unless you go to those "hostel" or very small scale hotels, all hotels provide an electric boiler that you can use tap water in bathroom and boil it. Then I use the boiled hot water + mixture of cooled down boiled water from supermarket & water from HK (starts from more proportion from HK in the 1st day then less and less). If there is no electric boiler in the room, ask the reception, or there will be a central one in the lobby for hot water. Boiler is small, so need to boil several times and let some cool down for use. Of course, sometimes we use bottled one from supermarket if he drinks a lot of water (very hot) that day....we prefer boiled water as we are not sure about the content of bottled one, but babies shouldn't have distilled water ga, they can't absorb some minerals wor.....advised from other mammys.

Oh, so happy that have your sharing too and totally agree with you as well, and you add more point that I miss out.

Wow, my hb won't let us have long trip (we use to have 9 to 16 days trip but we are worry if the baby may get sick (touchwood). So goo that you have your parent and parent-in-law together to take care of the baby, that really helps a lot!

My baby wakes up at 9:30 am Japan time(we follow same time schedule in HK, so 1 hr late in Japan time), and before that I go to have breakfast at 6:30 am (coz I can't sleep well), then my hb's turn, then feed him milk and play with him for a while and pack our stuff and normally can go out at 11 pm (don't know why we need so much time). We can have a 1.5 hr walk to the shop and wander around, it is time for him to have solid food at 12:30 pm (takes and hour), so we can only go shopping in between the meal times (4 hr interval less 1 hr feeding time), so not much time to much, and it is super tired bringing him around. Normally we are too tired and go back to hotel at 7 pm and wait for feeding his meal at 8:30 pm.......and last one at 12:00noon (as my baby sleeps late at night); or go back the hotel to take a rest in the afternoon. At Hokkadio, yes, same as you, we can do 1 activities in the morning and 1 in the afternoon only. Don't expect you can go to many sight seeing spots, though they are close.

Yes, about taking bath. We use the bath tub and filled with suitable level of water (as they don't have baby bath accessories in hotel, really rare), and both my hb and I hold him tight but it is normally not slippy but the bath tub is too big so my baby is frightened and cries in the first few days but get used to it later. And remember to bring some bath toys to make him stay calm and sit still. I never use shower in HK ah.

Restaurants are ok in Japan (I do think Japan makes me feel clean and people will try their best to arrange good place for you and your baby), and even we have soild food at Farm Tomita (tables where people having melon), places are clean....it is really hard to match the timing for sight seeing and the meal time ga.

I'm happy to see my baby has grown up and learn more after the trip. Though I think she has already has less/no memory of this trip, but we took many photos for her to see in future and this memory will last forever in my mind
.<---totally agree!

wow, you bring a portable heater with small pan? I have thought of it, but we are too lazy.....and I don't think I have time to buy fresh food and do cooking....see, he needs an hr for having solid food, but 15 min for milk...haha.

For water, I mentioned above, and I bought a 2L one.

May I know what kind of solid food u prepared for your bb during the trip? I am also planning a trip to Jap, too.

I didn't do cooking there, just bring those bottles like Healthy Times, Wakono & Ofukuro that my baby has tried before (ensure not sensitive to some food) and bring the same types. I like Ofukuro ones as it is somewhat like mix of congee/rice/vegetables/fish, and I mix this with other favour of Healthy Times, and he loves it.....but he is very "8 gwar", seeing things and people around so he spent an hour to have solid food; or sometimes he is so hungry that he can't wait for eating solid food so we let him have milk lor.

But my hb surrendered and gave him 1st try of cold apple and orange juice, as he is naughty with we have dinner in the hotels....

Don't know if it helps.

Wow you are all super mammies to bring your baby travel! We bring our little boy out every Saturday just to see more people and new things around. But even for 1 day, I feel really tired when I back home. My boy can walk by himself, so he likes walking around and refuses to sit in the baby trolley even he is himself very tired. He will ask us to hold him if he has no energy to walk. I can imagine what the situation will be if we go to Japan. In one occasion, we wanted to buy a pillow in a department store, my boy of course could not stay and just walked around in the store, and touched this and that. I could only follow him and make sure his safety. Then after a while, my husband's turn to take care of him, then I went to see the pillow I wanted to buy. Now he even starts climbing up and going down the stairs with my support, it is really exhausted for me. He will go up and down several times, then I will get wet from head to toe. I may have very low energy level compare to all of you.

In my case, we will not bring both parties' parents to travel because they are not "young". We may have to take care for more people rather than receive assistance from them. We will not bring our maid lar, seems not worth to do that.

My husband said when our boy can eat adult food, it will be more easy to bring him to Japan for the egg sushi, japanese noodles and pork chop rice. I agree to him to some extent.

However I appreciate all the mammies here to bring your baby to travel. All super-mammies!!

Momo627 - can you share your blog and fb with me of the trip?

hwylee - yes, we may add in fb ar! what is your name in fb?

Yes, the situation is exactly the same as you mentioned. Refuses to sit in the stroller, need us to carry him all the way through, wandering around here and there. Thank you ah. Haha, actually I think I can only go to Shinjuku Isetan, 1010, MyLord, Harajuku and Daikanyama for the shops I like, and shops for my hb and my baby, and the same restaurants we used to go (food are good so we seldom search for new places, esp. those need to queue, but hard to tell the location exactly).

Where are you going to? Actually those books sold in book stores are ok, telling most famous sightseeing places and restaurants, I rely on them as well. For shopping, only key in in yahoo, search the shop name then you can find their locations and websites.

And normally I love to go to those secret places where HK people seldom know and famous for Japanese people to go (but now most are now on the books, after I went there years ago, so you can find them on the books as well). For those secret places, I usually take leaflets for all areas of Japan about short trip for Japanese at those Japan tour shops at JR station each time I go to Japan, there I can see some places which are not well know to HK people and there are photos and price in yen showing how the hotels look like and the dinner set and onsen (hotspring, I love it), then I will go and search the hotel names again in yahoo and go to their website to study and compare and do online booking.

You re welcome ah. This time my baby loves the one called Sunval, it is organic with variety of taste, including vegetative & fish, recommended by my friend. I didn't bring the rice/congree this time and my baby loves it so much.

Remember to bring him some water or juice to drink ah
