Report on co-living
Introduction
At a time when the sharing economy isgaining currency, co-living has become increasingly acceptable. Initiated inDenmark in 1970, this trend has been prevalent in the United States and manyother western countries since the 1990s,especially among the millennials.
In this report, the reasons for theprevalence of co-living as well as the problems brought about will becomprehensively analyzed.
Reasons
1. The pursuit of affordable housing
To start with, skyrocketing property priceshave driven many young people to rent co-living apartments.
With the rapid economic development in theglobal arena, property prices have been soaring worldwide. In densely-populatedmetropolitans such as Hong Kong, New York, London and Tokyo, the rise inhousing prices is far more significant than that of inflation rates. Themillennials, who have just graduated and possessed limited purchasing power, often find it insurmountable to rent flats in urban areas, let alone purchasethem.
Facing such a challenge, many young peopleprefer living in co-living apartments to alleviate their financial burden.Renting a flat with four to five companions they have befriended in theircampus life or the virtual world, their rental burden can be significantlyshared. Also, the maintenance expenses of the co-living apartments are oftenshouldered by the property owners. Without the need to pay a fortune everymonth for housing, the young generation can either spend their monthly salaryto pursue more comfortable lifestyle, such as dining in deluxe restaurants andtravelling more frequently or set it aside for the establishment of their ownfamilies in the foreseeable future.
From the above, it can be seen that thepursuit of affordable housing is a driving force of the millennials residing inco-living apartments.
2. The desire to live with like-mindedpeople
It is also worth noting that the insatiablecraving for companionship and spiritual fulfillment can account for theprevalence of co-living.
Living in megacities of hustle and bustle, young people are bombarded by ceaseless and monotonous work on weekdays.Inevitably, many of them feel spiritually empty. Furthermore, for thosemillennials who have lived with their parents, they often have an enormousgeneration gap with the latter, having diametrically opposite views towards theproper ways of life and controversial social issues.
In view of this, more and more youngstershave opted for co-living. Through sharing apartments with confidants who havesimilar philosophies of life, such as living
in the moment, late marriage and democratic development, the millennialscan avoid unnecessary arguments and conflicts, enjoying a harmonious andpeaceful living environment. Equally important is that they can do whateverthey like in their leisure time with their companions, such as singing karaoke, partying as well as watching soccer and basketball matches at the early hourswithout causing disturbance to their parents and being reprimanded.
As we can see, the pursuit of freedom withlike-minded soulmates has contributed to the surging trend of co-living.
As mentioned above, co-living can bringobvious benefits to the young generation. Nevertheless, the potential problemsinvolved cannot be ignored.
Problems
1. The invasion of privacy
Living with other co-living tenants, theprivacy of young people may be infringed on.
In a modern society, privacy is somethingmost people demand. In pursuit of freedom and security, we would like to domultiple things privately, such as browsing certain smartphone applications andreading confidential letters.
Choosing to reside in co-living apartments, however, means that our privacy will be threatened. When we log onto ourpersonal banking account, our passwords may be accidentally seen by ourco-living partners, which is at best unpleasant and at worst causes securityconcerns. When we chat with our sweetheart via instant messaging applications, our intimate conversations may be overseen by other tenants, which may causegossiping and mockery. When we are taking a shower, the bathroom may be brokeninto by our housemate who needs to go to the restroom urgently, which willinevitably spark immense embarrassment.
Compared with living alone, when we cankeep everything secret, this erosion of privacy is something we need totolerate.
2. Conflicts with tenants
Having a sour relationship with co-livingpartners has also haunted many millennials.
In a perfect world, we can rent apartmentswith our companions with which we are familiar and have an inseparable bond, preventing conflicts. In many cases, unfortunately, we have no alternative butto co-live with strangers with totally different characters. Under thiscircumstance, arguments are bound to happen. For example, some of theco-tenants are messy, placing their personal belongings everywhere and beingreluctant to do household chores. As a result, we will have no choice but toplay the roles of domestic helpers, which will aggravate the exhaustion we feelin our daily life. While some of us crave tranquility in our residence, inconsiderate co-living partners may prefer to turn up the volume of thespeakers, immersing themselves in the world of rock music and disturbing oursleep at midnight. In the worst scenario, a small minority of co-tenants willtake away our personal belongings without requesting our permission, which willcertainly sparkle acrimonious conflicts. Failing to achieve reconciliation, some of the co-tenants will be compelled to terminate their own leasing agreements.
Conclusion
All in all, co-living is an affordablealternative which can simultaneously allow us to enjoy our life withlike-minded people. Prior to committing ourselves to co-living, however, weneed to think twice on whether we can tolerate the erosion of privacy and getalong with individuals with diverse characters. Only through carefulconsideration can we avoid turning the dream of co-living into a nightmare.
