I am tired of hearing "My kidswere not breastfed and they are okay". True, they might be. Luckily humansare extremely adaptable, unlike some other mammals. A foal that does not getits mother’s colostrum will die of infection because horses, unlike humans, donot get antibodies through the placenta during the pregnancy and so need thecolostrum to protect them from bacteria and viruses. Many human babies do notget their mother’s colostrum and get formula instead and still survive. Thisdoesn’t mean it doesn’t matter.
It is said that 75% of all children will have at least one ear infection by thetime they are three years old.
Paediatricians would consider this normal. But it’s not.
There is evidence that breastfeedingprotects against ear infections, though, of course, not 100%. There is no suchthing as 100% protection. Ear infections cause much suffering for both thechild who has it and the parents who take care of the child. Sometimes thereare long term effects such as recurrent or chronic infections that interferewith hearing and requiring surgery. Most parents would still say “my kid isokay” as long as the child does not have what the parent considers a serious, chronic disease such as diabetes.
It is important not to forget that the formulas of today are supposed to be farsuperior to what someone of 30 years old or 60 years old would have had astheir feedings (according to formula company marketing). When I was in medicalschool, commercial formulas were available but most people did not use them, probably because making up your own was much less expensive but “just as good”.These home made formulas usually used homogenized milk or evaporated milk, plusadded water plus corn syrup. These were felt at the time to be “just as good asbreastfeeding”. And yet, everyone today, even those who say that breastfeedingis not better, would agree that cow's milk plus water plus corn syrup is not asgood as the formulas of today. In other words,
mothers were told nonsense and because thenonsense often came from a paediatrician, mothers naturally believed itbecause paediatricians know about infant feeding; "it’s theirspeciality".
But let’s look some more with regard to formula.
Every few years, formulas get “improved”. The most recent marketableimprovement has been adding long chained polyunsaturated fatty acids (DHA andARA) to the formula. This “improvement”, accompanied by a huge and shamelesslymisleading campaign, is supposed result in the baby’s being more intelligentand seeing better. Does it? We don’t know.
Studies not financed by the formulacompanies say no.
But let’s say the DHA and ARA do infact make the baby more intelligent and improve his vision. Does that not meanthat until early in the 2000s when the DHA and ARA were added to formulas allbabies fed formula were fed milk that interfered with the intellectualdevelopment? "New and improved formulas" come out every so often. Inthe 1970s, taurine (an amino acid present in breastmilk) was added so thatbabies’ vision would be better. What about before the 1970s when babies did notget taurine? In the 1990s, babies could now get formulas with nucleotides whichare supposed to increase immunity. But what about the artificially fed babiesbefore the 1990s? They didn’t get nucleotides. The question comes down to: are theseadditions important to the baby’s health or not? If not, we are being sold abill of goods. If yes, we have compromised the health of hundreds of millionsof babies. And we arestill doing so, because formula is still missingcomponents important to protect and maintain the baby’s health. Wait for it, in the next few years, something present in breastmilk will be added to formulas that has always beenabsent from them and a new marketing campaign will convince millions of parents(and pediatricians) that this new formula is better than previous ones andcloser still to breastmilk.
