School - too early?

I noticed that in many posts, you ladies have talked about your children going to school at 2 or 3 years old. Isn't that too early?

I don't think I will send my kids to school that young. I think it takes the fun out of learning if they are pressurised at such an early stage. My intention is to homeschool my baby before she has to go to junior school (in the UK).

Is anyone else not sending their children to school so early?

Re: School - too early?

Whether to pressurise the child, by my observation, is more a matter of the parents than the school. As a matter of fact, one can make homeschooling very pressurised for a child.

There are still many schools which could let the children to have fun while teach them how to follow basic rules and live in a 'group'.

You can of course choose homeshooling, but he/she might miss the chance to learn how to play/interact with other children, so keep it in mind.

Re: School - too early?

I sent my daughter to school when she was only 20months. I sent her to the Montessori Toddler program, designed specifically for kids 18-36months. It is only a half-day program, from 9am-1130am.

She enjoyed it a lot and I noticed that she learnt a lot of things from there. For instant, just after 1 month in the program, one day, she was playing with a yellow block. She looked at it and said to me.."at school..yellow...at home...wong" It's amazing how much they learn. She also gets the socialization which I cannot offer her at home, just by myself.

I am not sure if there are any similar programs in UK or HK, which are academically oriented, but in a non-stressful environment. If you can find such program, I highly recommended it.

Re: School - too early?

Re: School - too early?

Well, my idea is to let Letty go to a playgroup a couple of times a week to learn to interact with other people... so I am not totally going to isolate her.

The reason I asked the question is that I've read on this forum where kids as young as 3 have homework and how some parents are upset because their children wouldn't do their homework or how they lack concentration when they are at school. It just seems so wrong to force a kid to learn and behave at such a young age... I just feel that children have to be children. Time goes so quickly that I fear they will miss out on a fun childhood.
