pls give me some information!

Dear all Canada mum,

I plan to settle in Vancouver after the Chinese New Year. I will go there with my children.
What should I bring to Canada?
My husband will not go with us. I plan to rent a flat. Can anyone give me some advise related to those living matter ?
I want to know how can I ship our things from HK to Canada?

it all depends on what you want to bring over.

for me - I lived in toronto. I did not ship any furniture over as I know those furniture used in HK might not fit here.

I came in Winter time, so all our luggage are winter clothes only). We ship the summer clothes, books, photo alumns thru the forwarder called Asian Express.

Do you have any friend and relative here? where are you staying right after you arrived? If you need to cook immediate after your arrive, you better ship your kitchen stuff over too - to save time for shopping around here.

Shipment should be done prior you are leaving and should arrive Vancouver at the similar time you move in to your flat, so you don't need to pay the warehouse rental for store your shipment.

we could not find our apartment by the time we got our shipment, so end up paying 1 month storage fee for such.

Hi hkmothermum,

The warehouse storage in Canada is most expensive. You may check with Crown or Wilcan (28983131). They will provide the estimate quotation for your reference. It should be door to door service and one month free storage in H.K.

The price for the electric rice cooker (110V) is around C$160-190 in Canada. The original price is around HK$1,100 in H.K. I bought it in Sogo before I came here (Toronto), which is around HK$800 after discount. No stock is available. You need to place an order with them and advice when you leave H.K.

Thank you for your information. I have a friend in Canada. I think I will stay with my friend for the first two weeks. I hope to rent a flat for my family. Is it difficult to rent a flat? What kind of flat is suitable for new immigrant? I don't know how to drive.
Is the furniture expensive in Canada?
May I know how much did you spend on ship all the things to Canada?

My friend did tell me to buy a rice cooker to Canada but I can't find one that suitable for use in Canada. I went to Sogo, wingon and sincere. The sales told me that they do not have 110V electric appliances. When did you bought your rice cooker?Besides rice cooker , what should I bring or buy in HK?

I just came here for four months only. I bought the rice cooker (Tiger) in May at Sogo, which is made in Japan. Please ask the saleslady to place an order for you. She will write down your contact no.
I need to wait for one month.

Same feeling and situation as me.

My hubby will not go with us. Luckily my sister is living there. So I need to rely on her when we arrived. Hope it is easy to adapt the new conditions. :wink:

good that you have relative and friend over there. my advice is try to learn how to drive if you have a chance, it's very important and more convinent.

I buy the chinese newspaper and look for the ads, call them, and go to see the apartment.
When I first come, I pick up the location, closed to Subway (like the MTR), with supermarket across the building. Of course, I pick up the area where most chinese stay - i.e. Scarborough. In my building, most of them speak cantonese, mandarin.

so easy to get a rental apartment.

agree that if you know how to drive, it is more convinent to go elsewhere.

for the rick cooker and other small appliance. I bought the national with multi-voltage. i.e. have 240 and 110. I used in HK with 240, when bring it over, I shift it to 110v. and I am still using it.

for the furniture, most of them I bought from Ikea, and only couples of them from the chinese furniture shop. not expensive, just like the price in HK.

Tiger rice cooker is not bad. I can use it for washing the rice directly. It's easy to adjust the water.

I'm not boring at this moment. I'm busying to clean up my new home. All friends and relatives are in HK. I missing them! My english is not good also. So many people came from HK and China in Toronto & Vancouver. I always speak Cantonese here. Even when I went to the big Dept Store, some of the sales lady or sales man could speak Cantonese or Mandarin. Don't worry about the English. If you have any problems, you could look for a social worker to help you when you're applying the school. I never take ESL course, it's so far away for me.

I got some information in the Chinese Newspaper. I have no driving license yet. It's not convenient for me. I'm living near the bank, Chinese restaurant & supermarket. I think I'll have driving lessons after the winter. It's convenient for me to live here.

If your children would be studying in Public School, please search the location before you come. If the schoolmates' background isn't good,your child will learn bad things from them, so choose your living area wisely.

If possible, you'd better bring along with your computer.

Thank you for your infromation.
Now I'm busy in finding the shipping company. The cost for shipping is quite expensive.
I hope I can manage to do all the things. It is quite diffcult to buy the rice cooker. Drum-stick told me that I can go to Sogo to find one.
