Question about applying for secondary school in Australia

My son is now 17 years and study F.5 in HK. I want to send him to Aust to study after the HKCEExam. So what is the equivalent grade of HK F.5 in Aust (NSW)?

I want to send him to a public school. Should I apply direct to the school or apply to “Dept of Education”?

Anyone has info about this? Thanks.

hi,
F.5 = Year 11.

is yr son a Australian Citizen or PR? most private school is better than public school. it'll be very difficult to enter public school if you're an overseas student.

another option, your son can study a Foundation Course from some schools which can re-direct yr son to the university after 1 yr.... of course his must need to reach some minimum score.

sorry i don't have the school name for NSW 'cos i'm from Victoria.

Hi, I think it's better to send him to a private sec. school as it means a better chance to go to a good uni and get in the right faculty. The private sec. schools in South Australia are good and they charge less school fee. I just send my son to a private Sec. school there. I am very happy with his homestay as well. I can share more with you about South Aust. as I studied there before.

Thank you all.

I think in Aust, most private school is equal to "good school". However, my son's academic result is not good. So I intend to let him repeat and learn better English in Aust. I want to choose public school because I want to save $.

If you want to save money and help your son to improve his English, you may send him to Adelaide (South Aust). I studied and worked there about 12 years ago and I have kept in touch with my Australian friends throughout all these years as they are really nice people.

The rent in Adelaide is much cheaper than other Aust. cities. As there are not many Hong Kong students, you son has to use English everyday in Adelaide.

Pls feel free to contact me for further info. I can ask my friends in ADL to give you more details about the govt schools. ( I did my teaching practice in Adelaide High School which is a good govt. school. Govt schools in Adelaide are happy to take overseas students. The S A Education dept. can offer English bridging courses for non English speaking background children . Your son can take a 6-month Eng. course to brush up his English before he starts year 10 in a SA govt sec. school.)

I previously study in Adelaide. My high school, Glenunga High School (now changed to Glenunga International High School) used to have many HK students.

Public school in Australia is not bad. However, not all public school provide accomodation for students, some students will rent a flat or home-stay with an Australian family. I think that is good enough to let your son to be independent and learn more English.

The chance to get into University is same for Public school & for Private school, as long as your son study hard, he can still enter the University he wants to.

Thanks very much for sharing your experience of studying in Australia.

As most students will choose Sydney, Melbourne or even Brisbane for their study, may I know the reason you choose to study in Adelaide? Cause I have not thought of Adelaide before.

Another thing puzzles me is that I have heard some schools have a high proportion of overseas students. This kind of schools may have better support to ESL students but at the same time, students of the same country will group together to speak their own language, rather than using English. That will defeat the major purpose of going to study in Australia.
