My husband's relative stay with us.....What a Nightmare!!
My husband's cousin who originally from CA found a job in NY. He decided to take the job offer. But
Since my father-in-law didn't like his attitude while he was staying at his place during the interview
week, he didn't want him (& his live-together girlfriend) stay at his house. Actually he did ask my
father-in-law whether he could rent his first floor (cause my in-law owns a 2 family house, only 2 of them live there and my husband and the other 2 brothers moved out once they all get married). Of course, my father-in-law turned him down nicely.
2 weeks before they arrived, none of them including the 2 brothers who own a house offered them
to stay. We have a 2 bedroom apartment and the small one is for my son but we plan to move him when he is 9 months old. So it is kind of available. At first, we didn't think about inviting them to
stay. But as time went by and nobody wanted to do it and I want to help my mom-in-law (the cousin
is her brother's son). Also, I knew how difficult it was to move to a new place. So I think since
we have a room not occuply yet. Me and my husband are willing to invite them to stay with us until they can find a place to rent. My mother-in-law was so happy about that. (the cousin originally planned to stay in YMCA which he described as cheap hotel which I think it wouldn't sound too
good and worried that the relatives in Taiwan would have bad mouth about it).
They arrived at the beginning of August. This is the first time I met the cousin and his girlfriend. They are quite young. That day was Thursday night. We welcomed them and helped them to settle down. We told them that if possible let us know ahead of time if they are not going to have dinner with us so that I don't have to prepare extra food. Friday, they went out on morning. I called my husband and he told me that they were going to China Town and I asked him whether they said they were coming back for dinner or not. He said they didn't say anything but guess they would not because
China Town had so many choices to pick. So I didn't prepare their food and they shown up at 5pm. I ended up had to prepare some extra salad in order to feed them.
When the first time I met his girl-friend. I introduced myself and asked her name. We didn't talk much and at that time, I think she is just a quiet girl.
They started searching for apartment and he started working as well. During daytime the girl always close the door and stay inside the room. Sometimes I asked her to come out because it was quite hot in the room since there is no AC. Once awhile
she would come out if it was really hot. But she took my book out and sit at the sofa and read it while I was feeding my baby. She would not say anything. Just simply sit there and read read read. It just simply deliver a message to me that
she didn't want to talk. So I am fine with it. One time, I saw her going thru my DVD collection in the living room when I went out to get something for my baby. I walked over there and she just keep looking. So I asked her whether she wanted
to see some new DVDs that I recently got which I put it on the coffee table. She told me she saw all of them already. Wow! She is quick! I think. Then she just turned back keep looking at the DVD shelf and I walked back to my room. I kind of feel
wired.
After that, once awhile, my husband would remind them in a calm tune that let us know if they can't make if to dinner. But they seemed to have problem to tell us directly that they are not eating with us.
Last Monday, I had a friend to visit at 8pm. My husband was late because of job. So I ate first. The cousin was late too and she wanted to wait for him. My friend shown up a bit earlier. We have some business stuff to go thru. Not wanting him to wait for
me to eat. I ate and listened at the same time. When my husband came back, I went to prepare his dinner and pour them a glass of juice. I also pour myself a glass of water. We finished the dinner and I put them in the kitchen. The cousin came back and they took the dinner that I cooked for them and then they ate. When my friend left, my baby started crying so I went to take care of him since my husband was in bathroom. I saw her cleaning the table so I thanked her and brought the baby to bedroom. I noticed the cups were sitting
at the dining table. Then I came out, I noticed they were gone. But when I went to kitchen, they were sitting nicely in the sink! I shaked my head and washed them.
Tuesday, I was prepared dinner at 6pm and she came out and said she was going downstair to wash clothes. Then about 45 mins later she
came back. At 7pm, she came out and told me that the cousin called and wanted her to go out. Gee! I looked at the finished foods and told
her OK. What else can I say?
Wednesday, she came to knock at my door and told me that she was going to deliver the application to the apartment where they wanted to rent. The place is 15 mins subway from where I lived. Then she left. Knowing that she didn't have my home key so I was waiting for her to come back. I supposed to go to the bank to pick up something. I waited and waited and waited and I decided that she were not coming back until night time when the clock reached 4pm. I didn't know whether they were coming back form dinner or not. I felt kind of upset. So I guessed they were not and I didn't prepared food for them. At 8pm, while I was waiting for my husband, they returned. My husband returned 5 mins later and he asked whether they ate or not and the cousin said no. My husband told them again, they should
let us know ahead of time whether they wanted to eat or not. It was kind of confused.
I was really upset and very hungry. However, I still went to prepare their dinners. Then when I finally prepared the food and set up the table, my husband went to tell them dinner was ready. His miss girlfriend said she was not hungry. She did't want to
eat!! Hell, I really want to scream at her. It must be something wrong with her. That's very rude!!
While they were staying with us, they were kind of sloppy, when I needed to use the computer, I saw they have snack bag opened and
placed them everywhere. I was kind of upset because it is my baby room and I am so worry that the roaches will come. They treated our place like a rental place. No appreciation is shown. I am kind of sick of it.
The night before they moved was kind of a joke. The cousin went out to have dinner with his friend who came to NY for visit. She stayed home to eat with us. I prepared the dinner and set the table. She came out and ate then when she finished. She simply picked up her own bowl and chopstick brought to kitchen and washed and went back to the room. My husband and I sit at the dining table and looked at each other unbelievelably.
Finally they moved last Saturday. Thanks God that now I can get my peace of mind back.
