Congee

My son is 7 months old. He tried cereal for one month but just ate very little. Any advice on how to make him eat more? I feed him, he can eat 2 spoons. My maid feed him, only 1 spoon. He also tried pumpkin congee once but also does not eat much.

Could you please give me some tips on congee:
Can I use 電飯煲 to prepare congee? Some mothers said the congee is more soft by using 電飯煲. 西施煲可以嗎? He tried banana, apple and pumpkin. Can he take fish congee now? If so, the pork is OK too, right? Then, how many month can take mixture congee (vegatable + meat)? I shop once in the market every week. Every day one fish. Trial period is 4 days. Then I have to buy 4 tails at a time? Can I keep them in the frozen cabinet of the refrigerator? As he tried cereal for one month already (although not eating much), the congee can be thicker, sticky (not watery) right?

Sorry that there are so many questions as I am a new mother. My parents died, not much friends to asking for.

Re: Congee

Belinda,

My daughter also did not like cereal. I learnt from some grand mothers that cereal was not good to eat and also learnt to make congee from them.

You will need to get a blender and a old style rice cooker. BB's blender is Phillips, comparatively smaller than normal ones, around $300. Her rick cooker is the smallest available from National, around 2 people. I can't remember the price. I don't know does 西施okay or not.

Meat : beef, pork, fish, chicken
Vegetable : Choi Sum, spinach, tomato, carrot, pumpkin, sweet beans

You can buy a piece of meat and cut it into several small cubes. Wrap them individually and keep them frozen. Take 1 cube out every morning to defrost. As for fish you can buy 1 big fish with big bones only and cut the 2 pieces of back meat for BB. If the fish is big then the 2 pieces of meat can be cut into several pieces, good for some days. To keep meat fresh don't wash it before you freeze it, only wash it before you cook it.

meat:vegetable:congee = 1:2:3

To make congee:
1. put rice and water into the rice cooker. Since I do not know how much rice you will cook, I can't tell how much water to put in but you can try and work out your own formula
2. when it is boiled add in meat cube, make sure you put a chopstick between the lid and the pot to avoid flooding
3. take meat out after about 10 minutes, let it cool
4. cut vegetable and meat into small pieces, if you make carrot congee you will need to cook carrot with meat till it is soft before you cut it, if you make fish check is there bones
5. put vegetable, cooled meat and some cooled boiling water into blender (hot food not okay to blender)
6. when congee is almost ready, pour 5 into congee
7. cook it till done

The first congee I offered BB was very sticky rice soup (can't see rice). It took me over 1 hours to cook congee for BB at the very beginning. You can adjust the water and time when your BB grows older.

You can also add in boiled egg yolk, about 1/4 or 1/3 (you can adjust) per day because it is good for BB's brain.

You can start by feeding 1 congee daily, choose a time BB always feel hungry.

Have fun.

Re: Congee

My son will be 7 month old on this Friday and I also planning to give him congee. He is now having rice cereal twice daily and he like the one from Nestle very much. He need more than 3 tablespoon rice cereal mixed with 1/4 pear or apple. He just have 3 Tbsp rice cereal mixed with pear and 3 oz milk.

For the meat, I have heard that you have to start with white meat first, i.e. chicken/pork/fish and then red meat the last, i.e. beef/lamb. You can prepare the meat for one week use. First, you cook the meat with water and blend it very fine. Put in the container for making ice cube and frozen. Just need to take one cube each time for the meal. Vegetable can also use the same method. Remember that if you cook carrot, spinach, turnip & beet, you need to pour out the water you cook with and add other clean water to mix with the vegetable since it have bad influence for absorbing oxgen inside their body for babies. You can start red/yellow vegetable first then green one, for example, carrot, pumpkin and sweet potato. Also, no cabbage, califlower and sweetcorn for baby before one year old. You can also prepare egg yolk to mix with congee for baby.

I also have hear the man from fish stall said that if you want to keep the fish better and longer, just put it into the freezer directly after you bought without cleaning it. Just make it clean when you going to have it. I use this method and find that it work since I like you just go to the market once a week!

Hope the above info can help.
