Let's start a cord blood bank to save the little lives that has cancer and other

Dear All

It breaks my heart to hear about little kids contracting horrible diseases. I was engaged in a discussion about "cord blood" tonight with my old school friends and we talked about the usefulness of "cord blood" and how sad it is that the richer sector may benefit from keeping this stored and the less unfortunate will be left to chances or luck.

I have started a topic at the "Free Discussion Forum" at BBK and I hope to have some support in whatever kind to kick this project off.

As for the parents who needs help to save a child with cancer, the fact is that many families in HK have saved "cord blood" in the private blood banks and some of it could be used to help save a precious life. It is indeed unfortunate that their stock is not open for access to the public.

I want to dedicate some of my resources to start-up this project during my lifetime. Will any of you help me do this?

I know that in public govt hospitals, they have plans to save up cord blood for the public. Before delivery of a baby, the mother will sign documents whether she agreed to let the hospital to keep the cord blood or not.

But, as I also know that, if any family members has 遺傳病, the hospital will advise you not to donate the cord blood. As my mom-in-law died in cancer, I cannot donate the cord blood to the public cord blood bank.

I do not know that this bank exists. If it is already there, we should do something and give them more money and resources so that it is better known. Can you tell me which hospital has this section and how to get in touch with them?

After certain enquiries, I have found that the Red Cross in HK does have a cord blood bank. In the light of this, I would appeal to all parents to donate cord blood. I will also be in touch with the Red Cross and arrange for donations to be made to them for this particular purpose. I hope that all of you will support the Red Cross in this matter and bring hope to those in need.

香港紅十字會輸血服務中心臍血庫簡介:
香港紅十字會輸血服務中心(本會)得到各大醫院(伊利沙伯、威爾斯、瑪麗、廣華、贊育)的血液科、小兒科、內科、婦產科醫生協助及香港賽馬會慈善信託基金的壹千壹百萬及其他人士捐款，成立了香港首間臍血庫，目的是為有需要的病人提供合適的臍血作移植用途。


用作儲存臍血的液化氮容器

何謂「臍血」?
臍血是指在嬰兒出生後從胎盤收集到的血液，它原本只是些不為人重視的醫療廢物，隨胎盤於嬰兒出生後被棄掉。及至六七十年代，科學家發現臍血內含有大量原始血球細胞(血幹細胞)，並如骨髓般可移植入病人體內醫治多種不同之血液病，如白血病、地中海貧血病等。自此醫療人員開始收集及冷凍儲存臍血來作醫療之用。

從胎盤抽取臍血會否危害母親和嬰兒的健康?
由於臍血收集是在嬰兒出生及剪斷臍帶後才進行，而胎盤在嬰兒出生後即成廢物必需排出體外，故在嬰兒出生後抽取胎盤的臍血絕不會影響母嬰的健康，也不會影響整個分娩程序。

將來如果我們和孩子有需要，能否優先使用我們所儲存的臍血?
本會處理臍血如處理其他血液製成品一樣，凡有需要的病人皆可用，但沒有人可擁有優先使用的權利。捐臍血者也不可要求本會歸還他們的臍血作私人用途。

怎樣才可捐臍血?
只要孕婦符合以下各要求，便可捐臍血:


夫婦雙方和子女不曾患有任何癌症。
夫婦雙方、子女和直系親屬不曾患有血液病、免疫缺乏症、凝血疾病、新陳代謝疾病及血癌。
孕婦健康良好，不曾患有任何傳染病，不曾接受凝血因子治療、器官或組織移植。
孕婦不曾於一九八零年一月一日至一九九六年十二月三十一日期間在英國居留累積超過三個月。
孕婦願意提供血液標本給予本會根據國際標準進行傳染病檢驗。
孕婦願意提供嬰兒的名字、身份証號碼及健康情況給予本會。

請填寫 捐臍血登記表 並傳真至 27101232。
