I will not. Shall we pose the question in another way. Will our employer allow us to listen to radio while at work? There is no need to ask right. They are totally out of control if you relax the rules. Every second they will listen to music, radio, hi fi and without paying much attention to work. This also applies to using telephone or mobile phone.
Yesterday, I finished work early and went to pick up my kids after summer school. The maid beside me (luckily she is not my maid), talk and talk using the mobile phone. When the children came out from classroom, she did not stop and only use her 'eyes' to pick up her small employer which was I thought 7-8 years old. The kid was very energetic and ran all the time around the school compond and even run into a school bus that was waiting there. I asked her to take care of the kid and stop using the phone! If I know the mummy, I will tell her.!! So irresponsible.

Why she needs entertainment while working?
Can you be sure that she can concentrate while ironing your clothes? Will your clothes get burnt?
Will she still pay attention to your sleeping baby, pause and check whether your baby have enough blanket, either too hot or too cold, or awake from nap and crying while she's enjoying her favourite radio programs or singing along with the songs?
Won't the sound of radio disturb baby's nap?
So, what's the priority in her job? Taking care of baby or listening to radio?
Sent her back to her home country so that she can listen to the radio anywhere anytime as much as she like.
I see a maid always turn on her madam's Hi-Fi loudly, and sing aloud after they left home for work in the early morning .

Haha markchan, my employer allows us to listen to radio and watch TV at work. Very free environment. We even have a plasma in the conference room.
Anyway, this involved some discipline. We cannot expect maids are too educated to have self-discipline.

My maid is the only one who take care my BB. Actually, I allow her to listen to the radio during daytime because if she has finished all the work, I will request her to sit down in front of the baby to watch / carry him the whole afternoon even he is sleeping. I don't want her to fall asleep and therefore I allow her to listen radio. Also, I don't want my baby always stay in an environment which is really very quiet. Sometimes my maid is not listening to the radio, she is using the mini-hifi to play some baby songs to my son.
I even borrow some books from the library for my maid so that she can read some books during the day time (since I know she is not so busy at home). Of course, I will not only borrow love story to her, I will also borrow some useful books to her such as first aid, how to take care baby...etc. Last time I found that she has marked down some notes after reading the books.

How old is your baby?
It's harm for her to listen to the radio because:
1) can she hear your baby cry when listening?
2) what is the volume, you do not know. This
may disturb your baby playing or sleeping. ]
My neighbour's maid on her raido very loud that I can hear when I was waiting for the lift.
3) will she take care of your baby when your baby is sleeping e.g. the blanket cover your baby, sweat of the baby, your baby is hot or cool etc. while she is listening to the radio,
4) Can she hear soft noise that made by your baby that needs the maid's help?
FOR SAFTY, NO listening to the radio is GOOD for your baby.
I am a housewife, my Ind. maid listen to walkman while working, or even ironing. She's very clever, she listen while working in the rooms and I was in another so that I cannot see her . But I find that she cannot concentrate to do the work well. Trousers ironed with the iron shape, tidy (not clean) my room use 45 min., call her can't listen. I now know why she spend too much time on working - because of listen to walkman.
I told her to stop this, she said that's OK. I asked her whether she could see Wellcome or Park'N's staff listen walkman or mobile phone? But few days or weeks later, this happen again.
So, my conclusion is : NO listening to the raido, walkman or mobile phone, tell her why you do not allow her to listen to the radio. But whether she follows your instruction is another thing. But first MUST tell her what is your requirement.

Actually the 1st time when I know my maid listen radio is because he tune the station to English. I have already told her don't listen. She really hasn't listen for a long time. But recent I find her listen again with low volumn. Of course, we immediately tell her don't listen. And of course she will show his bad face and even speak his language with her back to me. And also of course we ask her to come out and education her again. And she looks better and we didn't find her listen this few days. Actually, if she really finished her work. I prefer her to take some rest instead of reading books. But my maid also like to read books. One time I saw her read box in the dining room while my son is awake and my son is reading the photo album. Always need to educate. Sometimes I think if I am controling her so tight. Because I didn't allow her to go out in the daytime. She didn't has our home key. ?-(

You are too kind to your maid, they have day off and for other days, they should take care of the house and there is no question of going out without your permission. If you allow them once, then one day, you will meet them in the street while you bb is sleeping at home!!!! Similarly you cannot allow her to do other private things while at work like listening to radio, reading books etc they will simply ignore your BB and then do their own things at home. I have employed maids so many years and I know who are they. Most of them cannot discipline themselves so they are maids. (I am sorry to say this seems so rank conscience but it is the real life.)

You are so kind to your maid. Even my maid is only looked after my mom (she is 78 years old), She is not allowed to listening the radio. In case, my mom call her or somebody ring the bell, she cannot listen becase she is concerate on the radio. And how to measure the meaning of finished the job. May be she think BB is sleeping that is the meaning of I complete the job. The standard is not the same and it is very difficult to say she is completed her duty, right?

My baby will go to nursery on coming September. At that time I will give me maid key and ask her to bring my baby to school. Safety of my baby is the most I concern. Others, she will be very free. What will she do? Anyway I will not know. Except take some incident check. But actually, I will not spend time if only she in house which is a waste of time, right? What I can do is to tell her what she need to do. Such as use that 3 hours to finish the housework etc. And concentrate to take care my son when he is back from school. Anything I need to do or remind her.??!!
