Would you mind sharing your opinions with me? My family is planning to move to Oz in the coming year, probably no later than 2010. Among all possible options, we have selected Mel and Syd as our considerable places, but still, we are struggling in these two opinions. Would you please share your ideas about these two places, in terms of:
- living standard
- job opportunities
- people
- schooling (my son should enter K1 during 2010)
- anything that I missed?
Frankly I haven't been to these two places before, therefore I have NO idea about that. And now I feel a little bit worry about how to get familiar with the new life. So, your opinions is really valuable for me....
Thanks, it does help! I do want to listen to more opinions. You are the few one that prefer Mel to Syd.
Actually my hubby likes slower pace and spacious environment. He may like Mel more. But don't know would it be a little bit difficult to adopt the life there.
Really nice to have your opinion. We'll pay a visit to both places later and consider the location seriously.

Hi there, I've been living in Sydney for 18 years and moved back to HK in 2006. For my opinion, Melbourne is a much better place for living - slower pace, nice city, etc. Lots of finanical firms are based in Melbourne as well and the RMIT university is very famous if you are studying business degrees/courses.
But if you enjoy more 'Hong Kong' lifestyle then you shoudl live in Sydney. There are so many chinese people/shops in Sydney and makes it much easier for you to adpot Sydney life.
Thanks so much. It seems that Sydney should be a better choice.

Thanks a lot. I've already planned a visit to these place on Oct. I think I would go to Chatswood and Paramatta. And also thanks for your reminder -- the meaning of K1 in NSW. I think I should pay hard to study the Oz education scheme before move.

How about you pay a visit to both cities? You still got time before your move. The money spent may be worthwhile. I'll move to Sydeny soon and I did pay a visit there, then I found many worries can be released as I know a little bit more about the new place :)
You can get more info from BK mums about the major areas you should go in the cities, e.g., Hurtsville, Chatswood, Eastswood in Sydney - many HK ppl live there. Sorry I didn't know about the areas in Mel., but the BK mums there will definitely glad to offer you helps.
**BTW, is your kid 5 by 2010? The K-1 in Sydney (NSW) means 5-yr old. 3 - 5 may attend pre-school or day-care center. 0 - 3 mainly day-care.

Of course, Sydney - a well-developed city. Melbourne only comes second. Although Melbourne's development is a lot faster (may be faster than Sydney), it is still not an international city as such than Sydney.
Jobs can be found more easily in Sydney, but of course housing is more expensive there. But Melbourne's house pricing rate grows a lot also (but figurewise is less than Sydney).
For schools, universities in Sydney are more famous.
I think you are just like asking whether you should choose Hong Kong or Shanghai.
