You know, when I was living in Singapore, the singaporeans that I know, they don't let their maids to have any contacts with other maids. As they usually don't have day off, so they don't even let their maids to talk to others. They are very very strict to their maids. I guess it is because government is very strict to the people, so their people are also very strick to their maids too.
my maid worked in singapore for 2 years then back to indo, 2 years later, come to hk for 4 years (one employee) and return to indo for years and now work for me.
she is good in english & cantonese.
i'm in luck as she help me a lot and my two little boys love her so much.
ask you asking me if my helper is ok? :D I am in HK ah! and I am one of the few lucky one that has a really good helper.
I also heard from her that actually it is easier to apply for visa to singapore becos of the ASEAN countries regulation.. that's why a lot of them went to singapore. Cos it is easier to get there to start with.
But of cos, after knowing other places have better pay, they wanna leave sg to go else where...

Yishan, Serangoon north, Jurong East... I know that for the very old HDB flats they have a storage room... that can be used.. but the newer one (i stayed in bedok) doesn't have it..

hey~
For the HDB part, cos i lived in HDB back then, and know that all HDB doesn't have maids room designed in it. (liked I said, I don't know if the design has changed. But the brand new flat that my sister is getting next year is still without maid's room, so I don't think there is much change on that)
and most of my singaporean friends have all the rooms occupied by family. so a lot of them have the helper sleeping in the kitchen (with curtains covered).
Sorry if I made it sound bad.. But i have to say, yes, the apartments are much bigger, and the kitchen is also much bigger... and so there is more than enough room for the helper to sleep in the kitchen. I don't think that is actually bad.
As for the pt about no day off.. .I still think it is inhuman for someone to have to work all year round with no rest day. Even just 1 day a month is too little. I don't think that is acceptable.
As for the point about most of them are using the day off to service man and pass the stolen money to friends (??) I believe there are people who will do that, but you can't say most of them will do that. As for stealing, I don't think it matters if she has day off or no day off, if she is gonna steal, she will.
Most of your point is correct but one point as you said that in Sg (HDB) flat let a maid to sleep in the kitchen,,,i think this is wrong. In SG(HDB) flat is very bigger and some of flat have maid room . Meanwhile most of singaporean doesnt like ppl sleeping in kitchen because they feel that kitchen is for cooking not sleeping.
As your last point, you said that no day off.... (That part is very inhuman. ) This is very depends of the maid, as i knew and hear the case, most of maid day off they will:
* do special servcesi with man
* steal our money to pass her freinds to keep it.
Honestly if you ask me,, i think one month one day off is accetable. By the way, employee maid is for LUCK no matter the maid b4 was working which country.
GOOD LUCK TO ME AND EVERYONE FIND A GOOD MAID.!!!!!
this is what I know, not sure if they have change the system.
they normally have 2 years contract. for the first year, employer give the salary to the agency directly and employer have to jst take care of the daily food and all for the helper.
I have heard cases that actually the helper doesn't get any money from the agency on the first year cos they have to pay back the agency .. very mean. That's why they prefer to come to hk.
As for living standard, Singapore governments flats (HDB) which are flats that most of singaporeans live in doesn't have helpers room. so a lot of helpers are jst sleeping in the kitchen with a bed, some who are nicer will give them a room, but that is not very often.
As for speaking english, yes a lot of singaporean speak at least a little malay - which is essentially the same as indonesian, so they don't have to speak very good english to be able to communicate with the employer.
and they dont have leaves at all. That part is very inhuman.
