Jstn,
If Terrence has colic, then you got everything right. However, I don't suggest you to give any OTC medicine to infant below 6 months old without MD diagnosis.
The first thing is, bring Terrence to see his doctor, although, you are right, I suspect that Terrence has colic as well. And it is because of the digestion problem with Similac advance. But remember, we are not doctor.
That is true, to use the gas relief medicine which will help to relief the s/s of colic, but we need to treat the cause of colic, which is ..change the formula base.
But again, Jstn, Bring Terrence to have a doctor visit, as his pedi needs to file it into Terrence's medical record about his discomfort.
Do not treat your infant without medical advice.
Because if you go on the wrong track, it is child indangerment. You will be in big trouble. and you will harm Terrence.

jstn,
You can change the formula but you need to know the reason first. If Terence is allergic to milk-based, you can try soy-based. But, it's better to consult the doctor before doing so. Particularly, your husband should not buy the gas relief medication and give it to Terence without doctor's advice because Terence is so young. Countertop medication maybe too strong for him at this age.

I'll say that baby in the first few months is really difficult to take care. I'm having hard time with my daughter even though she's 6 weeks old now. Breastfeeding has been established well. I can pump out 3-4oz each time. Usually, I pump 2 times at midnight and occasionally some times at daytime if Amanda does not empty my breasts. I bottle feed her 1-2 times at midnight, usually with breast milk. However, she usually takes so long to finish one feeding and she cries so much plus having so much gas. Each midnight feeding can be 1.5 hours to 3 hours. (I have mentioned here for help some times here) Finally, I find out that she does not like to drink from the bottle Saturday morning, I need to take a follow-up diabetes test; it states that I have to take a blood draw early in the morning without eating for at least 8 hours, then have 75ml glucose and take another blood draw after 2 hours. In this 2 hour, I cannot breastfeed. So, I left Amanda to my mom and prepared breast milk for her. After I came back, my mom told me that Amanda cried so much and refused to eat. She only drank so little in the first feeding. For the second one, she split out instead of drinking and she kept crying that she swallowed so much gas. Since the blood draw was screwed yesterday, I need to do it again this morning. The same thing happened to Amanda again. I don't know what to do now. At first, I worried about how to establish milk supply for breastfeeding. Now, I need to train her to use bottle. I feel that I am trapped with her. She does not want to take bottle then how can I go back to work later or what can I do when I have doctor appointment. I don't know if I'm too mean to force her to use bottle since she's only 6 weeks old.

Rose-mag,
That was what I had gone thru when Gabriel was 3 months old, he was complete skin to skin 100% BF baby..
as I need to plan to return to work, so since Gabriel was 1.5 months old, we started to train him on bottle, but we complete failure.
Then I voiced my concern to all my BF fighter (my 0701 BF moms) for help.. with their courage.. and supplies (they sent me all the Japanese brands of bottles and teats)--> although, none of them worked at all.. but their courage, Iwill never forget!
However, my mom always discourage me, as Gabriel was so little.. so, I waited until she went back to hk and try again with my nanny on and off.. but still..
when Gabriel was 3 months old, I can't wait anymore, so I chose to starve him.. (my bad).. strict feeding every2.5 to 3 hours. if he doesn't take it within half hour, I will not give any feed in between.
after 45 days of fighting and stuggling.. Gabriel gave up, and cope with the bottle feed (but he did not increase a ounce in that 1.5 month). You can see how poor he was.
I was giving him bottle at night. Every single night, as nanny is the person who took care of him or I am the person to take care of him if nanny on day off. so bottle feed is a must at night as I work at night.
At daytime, I still skin to skin him round the clock, now he is 9 months old.
Now, he will finish a bottle of 8oz -9oz in 6-7 min. once he finished, he goes back to sleep in his crib with his bottle up right away.
you need to be tough to Amanda if you really plan on it.. don't have "soft heart" .. short pain rather than long pain lor!!

i don't know if i am doing the right thing ... Terence takes bottle very well, as i mainly bottle-fed him with breast milk and formula ... i know skin to skin is the best, but we are still struggling and my nipples hurt ... babies are really sensitive, in the beginning Terence sucked on the Similac ready to feed's nipple very well, but after we change to Born Free bottle with a completely different nipple from Similac, he can't use the Similac nipple anymore ... it's really heart-breaking when seeing your baby cries ... like Nillie said, you have to be "hard heart" ... hope that Amanda will do better on bottle soon ... when Terence cries so intense in the evening, i felt so bad as i don't know what i can do to help

in order to maintain my milk flow, i pumped regularly for every 4-5 hours ... now i can pump somewhere between 2-2.5 oz from both breasts ... hope the milk flow would increase continuously ... in fact, i should thank my mom as she has been making lots of soup for me ... just worry if i could maintain the soup-making habit when she's back to HK

Jstn,
Beside, you ask the pedi for advice on changing formula, and medicine to solve the problem. You need to ask the nursing to perform the burping skill again.
To have colic, one of the reason because of the burping skill. If you can get the right position and burp at the right time, colic and insentive crying will reduce a lot too.

Also, pump every 4-5 hours as a 1st time BF mom, will not be enough to help you to maintain and increase milk flow, as infant is feeding every 2-3 hours, if you really plan that BF is your option, you need to pump more frequently.
As I still pump 2-3 times at night, and skin to skin Gabriel 4 tmes a day to maintain my milk flow, wish I can BF Gabriel until he wean it by himself.

Nillie,
I wonder if you let Gabriel cried if he did not take the bottle. Amanda is really a fierce girl and she can cry so loud and so long. If she does not take the bottle, should I just let her cries and wait for another feeding? 3:30am today, I tried to give her bottle. She drank some, cried and split out some. After 45 minutes, she's tired and started taking some of the milk. At 5:00am, she fell sleep and finally she had around 4.5oz (I guessed that she actually took 3.5-4oz). In the future, she would take bottle mainly in daytime, should I offer bottle to her in daytime now and skin to skin at night? When I breastfed Spencer, I used to offer skin to skin in the morning before I went to work and evening after I got off from work. Should I start training Amanda with this pattern? That means I need to pump in daytime. Now, I only pump at late night and when Amanda has not empty my breast after feeding in daytime.

Rose-mag,
Same as you, I was so heart breaking.. when I was training Gabriel on bottle.
Do the way you tried on Spencer, as you used to it.
That is a good way too, but remember, you need to have enough sleep as well, if you choose to skin to skin at night, if Amanda on skin to skin at night, it will be very hard for her to sleep thru the night, plus because she doesn't have enough stimulation at day, she will choose to stay awake thru the night. You need to be aware of it.
I do suggest you to skin to skin before you go to work, and also skin to skin when you get home.
Then pump on other times, on weekend, you can skin to skin more at day time.
As I am working at night shift, my schedule will not suitable for any of you.

Nillie,
Yes, it's so heart breaking and very frustrating too. Both me and my hubby get few sleep recently. Luckily, we finally spot out the problem. Spencer is never a difficult baby on bottle feeding. Since he's bornt, he was both breastfed and bottle-fed. I have discussed with my mom (who will be the future caregiver in daytime) and she also supports me to start training Amanda using bottle. She also felt so sad that Amanda kept crying but drinking from the bottle.

So, I would stick to using bottle 1 time at night first and then gradually increase it to 2 times when she is ready. Hopefully, I still have enough time to achieve that. I'm planning to go back to work in Jan/Feb 2008. Thanks for your support in here. My hubby said that I have terrible depression this time and he has stopped working OT so that he can have more time at home to help.

jstn,

My girl also has colic so the pedi asked me to try the lactose free formula. It ended up my girl didn't like it so I sticked with the japanese brand formula that she usually has if I need to give her formula, but I mix the milk with gas drop before feeding her.

I guess you better listen to Nillie's advice to pump every 2-3 hours if you plan to BF for long. I knew her when my b was 3 months, so my milk supply didn't really boost up much even though I pump every 3-4 hours, but 將勤補拙

Rose-mag,

It's great that you have enough milk supply now. I couldn't pump out too much at the beginning (only had like 2-3oz ja), so needed to supplement formula when I first changed to all bottle feed at the beginning (even now I can only usually have around 4-5 oz in each pump). I totally understand how heart breaking it is when you need to be "hard heart", I usually cry together with Andrea when I need to do so :-(

Nillie_Mami,

Is your nipple recovered now? I wonder how long should it take to change rice cereal or congee to become one meal to Andrea... and how many oz of milk you need to mix with rice cereal to Gabriel for 1 meal? I'm now only giving her 4 teaspoon of rice cereal with around 1oz of milk and have been started feeding her rice cereal for 1 week...

Nillie,
My hubby is sweet "sometimes" - typically man, don't know how to say but what he does is caring. Of course, he has dismerits too - very stubborn and arrogant. Well, there's no perfect man anyway. I feel lucky most of the time already.

elmolly,
I cry with Amanda too, sort of feeling heart-breaking and frustrated, tired. But, I feel better after crying every time then, I told myself that it would get better everyday. And, my hubby reminds me all the time that it just takes time to improve.

jstn,
Pump every 4-5 hours is not frequent enough. You need to do that every 2-3 hours, just like the feeding schedule of the newborn to gain enough stimulus. Otherwise, the milk flow may not be established. Also, you may feel engorged if you wait too long later. Your body will tell you when to do it when the milk supply is steady. I cannot sleep, or even doing anything if my breasts are full, they will be very painful if I don't pump. Now, I can manage to feed Amanda 100% with my breast milk.

I called the pedi the other day ... she said that Terence's condition is not colic ... told me that if he has colic, he will cry intensely around the clock ... also, she said that it's too soon to develop colic as Terence is too young ... what she said was actually the opposite from what i read from the information about colic (start happening in 2-3 week since birth and usually cries in evening hours)

About the formula, pedi said no need to change as Terence poo-ed well, so that means he digests well ... suggested me to use Mylicon (the gas drop that we have bought already)

Pedi's conclusion is that Terence is just cranky ... what do you think??

After talking to the pedi, I have been using Mylicon in every bottle ... yesterday, he passed out lots of gas ... in terms of burping, we can help him having a big burp 80% of the times

Talking about husband, it's really sweet that your hubby realized your needs and do something to help out ... after Terence came home, my hubby likes to hold and play with him ... however, since Terence starts to cry more and can't be pacified, my hubby got impatient and always think that he's hungry and probably feeding can stop his cry ... in fact, he starts working at 7am and he's really tired when he's back home, so i can understand his stress ... also, i know he felt bad when he can't help out during the late night feeding ... he's so tired that even Terence cried out loud, he didn't move at all ... hehe ... i told him that it's fine as i can manage the late night feeding most of the times

Now, I feel the big change in my life after Terence's birth ... without my hubby's support and my mom's "sit moon" help, I think I will be on the depression path ... even now, I do feel my emotional ups and downs ... my in-laws will be here this coming weekend until next thursday ... honestly, I don't like them but still, they are Terence's grandparents ... hope that I can stand their words and still be ok ... wish me good luck!!!

jstn,
have you ever think of "seek for second opinion"?
As Terrence's pedi doesn't believe that he is colic, why she offers Mylicon for Terrence, which treats colic?
Hum.. if you believe in her, then you should follow the way she suggusted you to do. If not, as I said many many time, you need to go and search for another pedi, which have the same BELIEFS with you. That is the way for you guys to work together and bring up Terrence.

You told me that Terrence cried every night from 7pm to 11pm with tummy pain, cried intensively.
Did you bring him into the clinic or just make a call??

It is good to know that he passes gas very well, that will help to relief the discomfort.
Amanda and Gabriel doesn't really burp every time after meal, but they are good "gas passer".. as they are 100% BF.. that's really help!!

Help

Amanda's 51 days old now. Suddenly, from yesterday (maybe the day before yesterday) onwards, she did not eat as much as she did before. She fell sleep after nursing 5-10 minutes. I changed her diaper in the middle of the feeding which could wake her up. Then, she fell sleep again after another 5-10 minutes. She then slept for another 1/2 to 1 hour (max. 1.5 hours) and woke up for feeding again. Yesterday, I fed her at 3:30-3:500pm(BF), then 6:00-6:10pm (1oz formula), 6:40-7:20pm(BF), 8:00-8:50pm(BF), 9:40-10:20pm(BF), 10:50-11:45pm(1/2oz formula). She passed out a lot of gas and burped too but she had no poop yesterday. I wondered if she's sick or has an upset stomach. This morning, she woke up at 5:55am and my hubby fed her with 3oz breast milk but it took almost 1.5 hours and finally she fell sleep again. 8:15am, she woke up for feeding but only managed to nurse for maybe 10 minutes each side. Afterwards, my breasts were still full and I pumped out almost 3oz of milk (usually I can pump out 4-1/4oz if I don't nurse her). She is sleeping still (now is 10:30am). She was used to eat a lot and eat very aggressively. These days, she was so sleepy and did not really eat much. I wonder if she's still struggling for bottle-feeding or if she's sick. Also, she still cries so much, sometimes non-stop for almost 1/2 hours. Some of our friends suggest that she maybe so gassy that we should give her Mylicon to pass out the gas. Some suggest us to take her to see a doctor to make sure that she's okay.

Would she be on another growth perk? But, how come she's eating less and sleeping so much. Recently, my hubby and Spencer caught a cold and I worry that she's been infected (she does not have a fever). My poor little girl.:-(

Hi rose-mag,

This is Culver, we have talked briefly before I gave birth to my second son, Justin, and I have an elder daughter Karina who is 2 years old now. At that time we have similar EDD, however Justin arrives 1 week before that (AUg 17). How about your Amanda?

Reading your post, I have similar experience with Justin @ his 4 weeks (eats less, sleeps more). At the end we brought him to the doc and he really was infected by his sister who had a cold. The reason of eating less was because he was congested, luckily after taking good care of him for a week, that passed. Hope your Amanda will feel better soon!

Hi Culver, finally Amanda bornt on Aug 18, 1 day younger than Justin. Her current situation today is even worse. She has not pooped for 2 days already, just passing out gas. She fell sleep so soon and woke up more often. I have talked to the doctor but the doctor said that it should be fine unless her poop is hard and she constipated. Since she's too fat at her 1st check up (10 lb at the 5th week, gained 2lb 11oz since birth), the doctor said that it's just an adjustment. He asked me to take it easy, do not force her to eat, let her has her own eating schedule. Also, he does not think that she's colicky because she fell sleep after feeding, not crying non-stop. I hope that it's so and would see how's going in the coming few days.

So, you plan to go back to HK? How long would you stay? Most of the airline would help you to put food stuff in refrigerator if requested but how much milk you need to bring back? I have heard of a woman UPS/Fedex her breast milk back home to her daughter when she's on business trip but of course, the price is quite expensive. You can check if this option is acceptable.
