You have to try different positions of the chest and back until you hear the breathing. There are 2 things I would watch out.

First, to hear if the inhale is smooth and slow instead of rapid.

Second, to hear if there is any abnormal breathing sound like wheezing.

我曾經試過係佢瞓著左聽佢個背, 用隻耳貼住佢個背, 咁我聽到啲聲囉, 不過唔知係咩聲......

If you can hear it without a stethscope then it's pretty loud. But it could be the mucus etc. If the kid is wheezing, the sound is like heehee, like a motor or something.

I am no doctor but if I hear such sound I will rush to the doctor. And use ventolin for saftey purpose.
