FIRST WEST NILE VIRUS OF THE SEASON FOUND IN STATEN ISLAND MOSQUITOES

Health Department Will Drop Larvicide in Staten Island, Queens and the Bronx, June 23 - June 2

NEW YORK CITY – June 20, 2008 – The Health Department has detected West Nile virus in New York City mosquitoes for the first time this season. The virus, isolated in Port Richmond, Staten Island on June 18, has arrived earlier than usual. No human cases have been detected. Next week, the Health Department will start dispersing aerial larvicide in non-residential areas of Staten Island, Bronx and Queens to reduce mosquito populations (details below). Surveillance and control efforts will continue through the summer
Some people experience only mild flu-like symptoms after contracting West Nile virus, but the infection can cause also encephalitis, a potentially fatal inflammation of the brain or spinal cord. "

eople over 50 are the most vulnerable," said Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, New York City Health Commissioner. "Fortunately, anyone can avoid infection. The best way to reduce your risk is to wear repellent if you go outdoors in the evening, when mosquitoes are most active."
The Health Department has stopped investigating reports of dead birds – testing mosquitoes for West Nile virus has proven to be a more effective monitoring strategy. As in past years, the agency is urging residents to take simple steps to protect themselves.
Reducing Exposure to Mosquitoes

Use an approved insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus (not for children under three), or products that contain the active ingredient IR3535.
Make sure windows have screens, and repair or replace screens that have tears or holes.
Eliminate any standing water from your property, and dispose of containers that can collect water. Standing water is a violation of the New York City Health Code.
Make sure roof gutters are clean and draining properly.
Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs. Keep them empty and covered if not in use; drain water that collects in pool covers.
Report standing water by calling 311 or visiting http://www.nyc.gov/health/wnv.

If you think you have symptoms of West Nile virus, see your doctor right away. The most common are headache, fever and extreme fatigue. For more information about West Nile virus, and how to avoid it, visit the Health Department website at www.nyc.gov/health or call 311.

UPDATE: Due to weather conditions, the aerial larviciding event for June 23, 2008 has been cancelled.

Health Department Will Treat Natural Areas in Staten Island, Queens and the Bronx with Mosquito Larvicide from June 24 through June 25, 2008

To control the number of mosquitoes, the Health Department will apply larvicide by helicopter to marshes and other non-residential areas of Staten Island, Queens and the Bronx. Weather permitting, larvicide will be applied from Monday, June 24, through Wednesday, June 25, from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Larvicide is a natural product, not an insecticide.
In case of bad weather, alternative application dates will be Tuesday, June 24, to Thursday, June 26, from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Mosquito Control Definitions
Aerial Larviciding - Dropping natural bacterial granules by helicopter to marshes and other large natural areas to kill mosquito larvae before they grow into adult mosquitoes. Does not take place in the residential areas of NYC

Adulticiding/Spraying – Spraying a liquid insecticide from trucks to kill adult mosquitoes. Can take place in residential or non-residential areas. No adulticidings are scheduled at this time.

We have been back to HK for a month lar ... my hubby will arrive tomorrow .... very excited ... HK's weather hasn't been good ... cloudy, rainy, and stormy most of the times ... but still Terence enjoys much when meeting new friends and family members ... most people said he's much bigger than viewing photos ... and he's very mobile .... crawls very fast and always pull himself up ... also attempt to stand on his own ... grandparents said he will walk soon wor ... whenever i hold him, he treats me like a tree to climb on ... haha

Need Help!!!
Ivan has a high fever for 3 days and his fever is on and off all the time. This morning, his fever is up to 104.6. My heart is broken to see him suffering like that. I am so upset and helpless I can't help my baby more.

somebody know how to let him feel better and get rid of ferver? Is that any way can prevent fever back up again after his temperature is back to normal?

有無同仔仔看E生? 可能有炎症? maybe you can call his pedi and see if the pedi suggest to take motrin? cus ian's pedi suggest to take motrin if fever goes up to 104. but again, pls consult his pedi 1st. cus different pedi has different suggestion. i remember another pedi told us that 小朋友FEVER會LAST 3幾日..
上次我細仔燒左3日半但食得玩得﹐原來係玫瑰疹..
小朋友發燒真係令人擔心﹐太多可能..
幫仔仔用溫水沖涼﹐KEEP住959抹下身﹐降下溫﹐他會舒服D的。如果個身熱但手腳冰冷可MASSAGE下D手仔腳仔等血液巡環和散熱.. 著少D衫等他可以散熱啊(我試過連片都無同細仔著﹐光脫脫..﹐我見佢燒到104就心痛C..)
.. 記住唔好用爽身粉因為會BLOCK左D毛孔的..

I already brought him to see the doctor at the second day. pedi said may be he has virus or bactiria infection. not sure, but he prescribed one antibiotics and two fever medications -tylenol and motrin to him. Because either one singly use can't reduce the fever, I need to use both. If Ivan looks ok and act normally, i don't need to worry too much. but if he change behavior such as seizure and don't move.

I am sick to see his temperature going up again and again. Today's morning at 3 AM, his number goes to 105. First, we put him to water, take a motrin, put him to the water second time. finally, fever is down to zero slowly.

What do you mean 玫瑰疹? what it looks like? he can drink, play around, and smile. But today's morning, he begins screaming and crying. that is first time he do that. Maybe he feels very uncomfortably. Normally, he always smile and clap his hands after he wakes up.

I have one question. sometimes, after fever is down, his whole body is cold and shake, and then he cry and don't want to stay at the bed alone. so i hold him tightly, soothe him and make him comfortable. Is that ok if baby has fever?

Today is fourth day. I don't know how long the fever will last. I hope it will end today.

did you call his pedi and inform him that your boy's fever was high to 105? ian was at 104s but then it went down to 102s when i brought him to see his pedi. she suggested to have a blood test back then, ian was 8-10 months or so.. i don't really remember...

One of my friends who is a RN told me to use of Tylenol and motrin alternatively which can be more easier to control fever. Also, wipe Ivan's forehead with wet cool towel can have him to feel more comfortable. One of the BK moms in HK mentioned that she let her son to sleep on a water pillow which can help to lower down temperature more effectively. Agree that if the kid acts normal then we don't have to worry so much. If Ivan is quiet or very fussy, he must be very sick and feel very uncomfortable. Did your pedi mentioned when you should go to see him again if Ivan's still sick?

If Ivan has 玫瑰疹, he will have fever for a few days and once the fever goes down, you can see some red dots on his body but these are not itchy. When you see these red dots, he's already recovering. My kids do not have it yet but I have seen other kids having it before.

It's normal for a sick kid to stick to the mom and does not want to be alone. I held Spencer all the times for a few days when he's sick in May. He used to be very active and cheerful. Those days, what he wanted was only being held by me or my mom. He refused to eat, napped 2 times in a days as he's tired. If Ivan is cold and shake, cover him with a blanket and hold him, soothe him. Once he sweat out, change his clothes and sweating helps him to lower his body temperature.

Hope that poor Ivan get well soon.

Thanks for all moms suggestions. They are very helpful.

It has a good sight today. Ivan only has a low fever at night 12am. we give him Tylenol. And then fever disappears. for whole night and until now, no fever shows up. but he begins to have running nose now. he wakes up one time for every 1-2hours because running nose blocks him sleep smoothly.

Hope the fever ends up taday.
