brbaby2007,
Don't be so unhappy. I can feel your pain - not able to feed your daughter and clot ducts really hurt. Luckily, it's not too serious. If you have fever, it won't be just engorgement. The doctor should not just give you pain relief. For the lactation consultant, don't take it too serious. As a new mom, you should not know everything. Have you asked her to teach you how to nurse and pump correctly? You know, you paid for her services and you have the rights to ask. Do you still remember how she helped you to clear clot ducts? I do sometimes have the problem but before it gets worse, I would try to clear them by myself. You can use hot press on your breasts, or take a hot shower, then use your fingers to massage the hard parts of your breasts - press on the parts hard in circle, until the milk come out like a stream and your breasts softened. It can be quite hurt but it is better to take care it at the beginning. I would check my breasts after every feeding or pumping to make sure that they are empty to avoid clot ducts.
Do you have a clue why it happened? I remember that you said that it's so difficult to empty the breasts. Do you feel any hard spots before? I have not used any hand pump before and hand-squeezing is too slow for me. I can only use no more than 20 minutes for pumping when I'm in the office. So, I use electric pump since my previous baby bornt. Anyway, you can try to rent an electric pump and see if it helps or not. Or, you can always go to the health clinics and ask the nurses there to help. I believe that they can give you a lot of different advise. Too bad that I am not living in HK. Otherwise, I don't mind to come to visit you and help although I'm not a professional.
Regarding low milk flow, there're some issues that you need to review: -
1) Do you eat well? You need to eat A LOT!!! I eat at least 5-6 times when my baby was before 3 months old. A lot does not just mean the portion. You need to eat healthy, a lot vegetables and fruits to prevent constipation for you and your baby. Eat more frequent instead of eating a lot each meal.
2) Do you drink at least 12 glasses of water, soup, milk or beverages? You need to have enough fluid to produce milk. Sufficient fluid can also prevent UTI too - more water more pee mar.
3) Do you rest enough? If you have no sleep, your body cannot produce milk. And, that's why people say mom has to go to bed when the baby's sleeping.
4) Are you stressed? Don't put too much pressure on yourself. The more tensed you are, the higher tendency that you cannot produce milk.
5) Do you nurse on demand? Do you supplement with formula? You need to nurse your baby when she's hungry, forget the schedule first. Nurse when she wants to eat and try to nurse before offering formula. Try to nurse longer each time and it stimulate your body to make more milk. Gradually, you can try not to supplement with formula. The pay off is that you might need to nurse more frequent. My daughter is now almost 6 months, she still need to eat every 3-4 hours and still cannot sleep through the night. My son who was half bf and half formula-fed, he ate 5 times a day and slept through the night.
6) Have you tried any food that can help milk production? Papaya (green one works better than red one), pig's limbs, chicken soup, fish, etc. work for me.
7) If you want to have more quality milk, you should consider have vitamin supplement. I take prenatal multi-vitamins, DHA, Omega 3 and Calcium supplement everyday. Baby takes the nutrition from you and it's important to supplement. Otherwise, your body would be short of these and it will affect your health later.
Take good care and take it easy. We have faced and will have to face a lot of challenges to be a mom. Clot ducts is just one of them and surely we won't be defeated by just this little matter. We have to be brave to protect our sweethearts. It's so lucky that your mom can help you to take care of your daughter when you and your husband are sick. Surely that grandmom will take good care of her. Take this time to rest and be prepared to take care your baby girl after you recover. If you miss your daughter, call your mom and let your daughter listen to what you said. It sounds silly but don't underestimate a baby. My daughter and my son know when I call and they will appear to be very excited.
I need to go back to work lar. If you really need someone to talk to, drop some lines her and we have so many BK sisters here to support you.
