I just finished moving and tidy up the place. We bought lots of stuffs this time, so more labour work then I expected. Since we moved to another city, we have to re-establish the internet server. SBC said it will take 7- 10 working days to register the system :-( :-( :-( can you imagine life without the internet . Need to wait for another 7 days then I can go on line evreyday again.

Recently, I have encountered many problems. I was told that I need a social security number before I can go for driving test. They said I have to apply the working permit first and then the social security number and then driving test. I consulted a lawyer, working permit takes up to 3 months to process and social number needs almost one month. Therefore, I will not be able to go for the driving test untill October. It's such a long waiting period :-( :-(

How much does it cost for you to apply your working permit? Is $100USD fair enough for the attorney fee?

Whalebb:
My hubby's company is going for BlueCross health insurance, what do you think? There is a 6 months waiting period for new comer and I am planning to get pregnant next year sometimes after October, so do youuthink I should buy insurance now?

Natmama:
The US Mom Chat next door seems to be more suitable for already mom or mom to be ... and I am neither of that ne

If you plan on getting pregnant, then you should apply for the health insurance asap. Once you are pregnant, then the individual insurance plans will not take you. If possible, your husband's insurance will probably be cheaper and with more coverage. Just make sure if his plan will allow to add you if you are already pregnant. :lol: :lol: :lol: Have fun in your new house

I don't think I can join the gathering for this month :-( :-( Initially, my hubby and I planned to buy a small car after I pass my driving test, but now, no social number means no driving test means no car to go out. We are using the company car at the moment, he drives the car to work at day time and come home around 6:30pm, so I stay home most of the time. It will be hard for me to go out untill we buy our own car

Wow.... I said before that your case is similar to mine when I first arrived. Now it seems that statement is very true:

I remember I experience that also, but then I remember I found some way to overcome it.... sorry, bad memory and cannot remember the detail now. Let me go home tonight and see if I can find the relevant doc.

But don't worry, u can get more practice during that 3 months of waiting....

For the work permit, it's pretty easy to do it yourself, because the website has clear instruction of what to mail to them. And once u submit the application online, that 3-month period will start to count already. If u don't receive any reply after 3 month, u can go to the local office to obtain an interim work permit, which is good for working already.

Me the same case one year ago ah! It does not really matter, as all mom there are very nice!!!

Sorry I don't know much about SSN. But I know that you can still get a social security card even though you're not resident/citizen ga. it shows "not for employment" something like that on the card.
For ins info, just like whalebb said, try 角聲 or you can call any OB office, they have lots of information on getting ins/medi-cal/aim.

What the officer said is true, however I did the followings in order to fasten the process:

(1) Go to SSN office to ask for a "denial letter" saying that u don't have a SSN not because u are illegal immigrant, only because u have not got your work permit yet.
(2) Use that letter to make appt with DMV for a written test. LA drivers need to pass written test and then driving test. If u pass on your written test, u will be issued an interim driving license already, good for 1 year (?) but u have to drive with someone having real license by your side.
(3) Use that interim license and your husband's real license to buy a car and car insurance. In that way, the car insurance will still cover u and the cost will not be very high.
(4) At the same time, apply work permit and take driving lessons.
(5) After 3 months, get an interim work permit and use it to get a SSN. Book the driving test and u will be all done!

The good part of all these is u really do all the things in 3 months + u can buy your car earlier.

Hello to all !! Sorry it takes me so long to reply. I finally got my Yahoo DSL package, but still waiting for the active day which is next Tuesday the 5th. For the time being, the only time that I can use internet is when I follow my hubby to work or when we visit our cousin. Later on, I shall introduce myself to the USA mom Part 3 when things get settle down. In that way, I can be sure to chat online with you all everyday

I don't think I can join either the mini gathering next week or the one held on 16th. The lawyer has book me in for the fingerprint and photo appointment on the 16th and for next week, I shall go to SSA for my denial letter and try my luck at DMV. I would like to thanks Shiba_Inu for her help in this matter, without her tips, it will take me ages to go through all these process. Also a big thank you to whalebb too :-P I have check out the website that you sent me and download the information booklet. I have lived in LA for 14 yrs, then moved to NY in Feb last yr cus my hubby is from NY. I will be going back to NY on the 26th ar..

I'm a friend of whalebb, natmama and shibu..
I'm a stay-at-mom , my little boy, mini-matt, just turned 11 months old(only 4 days apart with Natmama's lovely girl). I live in Long Beach, it's quite far from LA, it takes about a hour to get there. I can't drive either , so I can't meet the LA moms very often, but I'm going to the 716 gathering.. I wish you could come..
you paid USD100 for the working premit or green card ? that's very cheap. I paid USD 1,300 to apply for my green card ..
Regarding the drivers license. I remember when I was still holding my valid I-94 visa, I could go to get my drivers license at DMV .. The written test's not that difficult, I remember they have thel questions and answers in the directory book. I got a 100%l score on the test. But I forget all completely now..

.. Unfortunately, I failed my road test. :-( :-( ...

I read about your "can fish" story, thanks for sharing :mrgreen: My auntie went for her driving test on Friday but she didn't have to go on the Freeway , may be she is old

Anyway, the USD$100 that I paid is for my working permit, I shall try the DV-lottery later in November. An hour drive is not far, as before I got marry, my husband lives almost an hour away from my home. I used to drive or take the train to meet him every weekend. I hope one day when I pass my test, I can join other US mom to go to long beach and visit you.
