I usually send a e-mail or thanks card le it is much effective. Just few weeks ago, I send my thanks & regards to a lecturer, he immediately knowing who I am 
even though there is 40 classmates in the class & he didn't know my name before, as we take attendance by ourselves.

as long as you have put down something, teachers will give u marks la cos they concern whether you have studied and learned something, quite different from formal day-school teachers.
