Hi everyone,
My baby is 5 months old and she's causing me headache. I have some questions regarding breastfeeding and weaning, grateful if anyone can give me some advice.
JamJam2007,
I have gone thru what you are facing now. My daughter Amanda was bornt at 6X% of percentile and even the doctor asked me not to feed her too much when she reached 10lb in the 1st month checkup. When I needed to plan to go back to work and start her with bottle-feeding, she refused to drink from bottle and every feeding with a bottle was just like a battle. She cried crazily, moved her head left and right to avoid the bottle, went to sleep... she would take no more than 2oz each time. My mom helped me to take care of her. In the first few weeks after I went back to work, Amanda took so little milk and sucked so crazily when I came home and fed her. She even woke up 2-3 times every night for feeding, we guessed that she wanted to supplement more at night so that she can stand for starving in daytime. From then on, her weight gain slowed down but she's still in the 50th percentile and the doctor told me not to worry as baby's weight gain will slow down when she grows older. And, possibly my daughter is a light eater and she has adjusted her intake.
Then, gradually she get used to the pattern that she needs to drink from the bottle when I'm not around. She takes the bottle when my mom feeds her. But, still, she's picky. When my hubby feeds her, she does not really want to drink. She's going to be 8 months now but she still drinks so little milk, no more than 5oz for bottle-feeding. When I feed her skin-to-skin, she sometimes can drink a lot (If I express milk with a pump, I can get 6-8oz of milk). I have just started her with 1-2 feeding of rice cereal and babyfood. She's doing okay but still want to supplement with skin to skin afterwards.
Give your baby some more times and have a stable caregiver other than you to feed her with bottle. For your milk flow, exclusively feed her skin to skin during weekend or holiday, also skin to skin before and after work can help to maintain production. And, if she does not willing to suck on you, you may need to pump regularly. At least, if she does not want skin to skin, you can still have breastmilk to feed her.
One more thing - have you tried different bottle and nipple? Baby who prefers skin to skin usually does not like small and hard teat. You should try wide-neck bottle and soft teat for your baby. I use The First Year Breastflow bottle and the teat is double layer, very soft. I have seen a caregiver giving a bottle called Adiri for a baby in her daycare and she shown me the bottle. The bottle is wide and the teat is very soft, like mommy's nipple but it possibly cause gas problem. Check out and see if you can find a bottle that your baby likes.
