pink0325,
I read your message in another topics. Honestly speaking, level 18 is really a high degree and your baby should be under the light to lower his jaundice level. My son was jaundice and he was at the level 18 two days after discharge from the hospital. The doctor and the nurse kept him in the hospital and put him under phototherapy until his jaundice level dropped down to at least 12. At the time being, I was told to continue breastfeeding with supplement of formula because usually mom does not have enough milk to help out the jaundice baby to get rid of poisonous stuff from the body yet. I pumped out milk at home and brought it to the hospital. The nurses fed him with the breastmilk first then formula. I visited him everyday and breastfed him there but the nurse did not allow me to breastfeed for too long as my son needed to be under phototheraphy. One of the nurses told me that it's important to feed the baby more milk so that he can poo out the poisonous stuff from the body and built up his digestion system. Otherwise, it would affect baby's brain development.

My daughter also had jaundice but a very mild one, possibly in between 10 to 12. Her pedi did not send her to hospital but told me to bf her more often and watched her if she did not have enough soil and wet diaper. Also, he told us to put her next to the window so that she can be exposed to sunlight indirectly which can help her skin to absorb vitamins D. She finally out grew from jaundice gradually.

I think that your son really need phototheraphy at this moment. You may need to talk to your pedi or look for 2nd opinion. If you cannot stay with him in the hospital all the time, you can pump out milk every 2-3 hours. Take care as your health is also very important.

Hi Isaac mom,
Life is not easy in here, particularly that you have not developed a sense of belonging yet. I still miss HK after moving to here for 4 years. For HPV vaccine, you can consider to visit Planned Parenthood. It's a non-profit organization and would charge a small lumpsum if you don't have an insurance. They have clinic in San Francisco, Redwood City, Oakland, Hayward, San Mateo, etc. You can make appointment online www.ppgg.org click health centers and locate the one you want to visit. Each clinic has its own schedule for different kind of service. You can call to make appointment. I believe that HPV vaccine is somewhat around $200 per dose but you're better call to talk to the representative to make sure. I know that getting birth control pill or seeking family planning is charged only $20 if you don't have insurance coverage 4 years ago.

hum..for the bili level at 15.. I don't think the peds will admit this infant into the hospital. As for infant.. about 14.. they will tap off the photo therapy.
If the peds now send the infant to hospital.. he will be questioned with "malpractise" because he did not send the infant back to hospital while infant's bili is 18.
Pink.. just bare in mind.. bf baby normally takes longer to get rid of Jaundice.

Nillie_mami and Rosemag,

Thanks for the post. I'm quite relieved now. The ped called last night and said the level has fallen to 12, so he allows me to resume breastfeeding. He says he promotes b/feeding but for this case, he had to stop me from b/feeding so as to lower the blood level of the baby. Anyway, he suggests me to b/feed him every 3 hours (but I did every 2 to 2.5 hours after resuming, because I believe as I b/feed him more, I'll have more milk and he'll have enough fluids! Am I right or not?) He also said it's OK to supplement with formula. I already told my husband if I resumed b/feeding, I would not supplement with formula.

Well, my ped didn't prefer to put him on phototherapy because he says there's always side effects for each treatment. Actually, this ped isn't the one who discharged my baby in the hospital (he doesn't go to the hos. where I gave birth, but we went back to him because he's my elder son's ped. He's an experienced CHINESE (from HK) ped, so we kinda trust him. But Nillie's mom is right. If the ped and I have different "beliefs", it'll be hard.

So, I hope my baby will be fine and I do know the jaundice takes a longer while to go away if he's breastfed. I read so many books and had some researches on that. I fully understand, it's just that my ped kept warning me if I continued to b/feed, the jaundice would get high and cause brain damage . . . then my husband (who firstly supported me to continue b/feeding at the first place) was scared. I got no support, so I had to stop. But I'm very happy that I was able to put my breasts to my baby again last night. He latches on pretty good too, so he didn't forget me, haha.

Thanks for your support.

pink0325,
Yes, you should bf your son more often to help him get rid of jaundice. I remembered the NICU nurse told me that the trick is to feed more, in terms of frequency and volume, so that the jaundice level can be lowered by pooing more. That's why the doctor usually suggest to supplement with formula as bf needs more energy and jaundice baby usually likes to sleep. To make sure that baby intake enough milk, the nurse in NICU prefered me to pump and let them bottle-feed which takes shorter time so that my son could return to the light faster. Well, it can take up to a month to have the jaundice gone. Just keep observing your son's status when you bf. Put him next to the window after bf and it can help to lower the jaundice level too.

Your son is so cute. Congratulations and hope you enjoy this breastfeeding.

Rosemag,

Thanks. Yes, my little one likes sleeping a lot, not like my elder son when he's a baby. Now I'm breastfeeding him every 2.5 to 3 hours. I enjoy breastfeeding very much, and I will not give up. I hope my baby will have more "poo" because he seems not to have much poo after he's returned to my milk instead of formula. That kinda makes me worried and I'm not sure if I should give him my expressed breastmilk in a bottle as a supplement. He still remembers how to latch on, but I have a feeling that he's lazy and doesn't often suck hard to swallow my milk.

I don't often come to this forum. How old are you kids? Which part of the US are you residing?

Pink,
good to hear that your son is doing fine.. and keep going with breast feeding..
as I am working full time, monday to friday, as a visiting nurse+ nurse recruiter, my job is crazy.. and Gabriel is 1 year 5 months old, now, he only need skin to skin at 6am, and skin to skin at 6pm.. I don't pump milk anymore, let it be.. and Gabriel takes bottle with whole milk for the rest of the day..
BF is the best food even for jaundice baby (but it takes very long for the bili level to go down), as you know every well.. the way to let the bili level to go down, by "poo poo".. and BF normally prompt better bowel movement. also, jaundice babies are sleepy beauty and prince.. and that is a problem to rehydrate them.. and bf is the best food for them.

Rose-mag,
how is Spencer?? does he do better now?

Isaac.cheng,
If you want the third HPV shot at new york, maybe I can help you because I am working at the medical office. As I explained to you before, HPV is noncovered by most of insurance or only covered by half price. If you want to take it, you need to pay for vaccine price first. We do it to all our patients. But the situation is you are a new patient. For any new patients who want to take a vaccie, she needs to examine them to check if the vaccine is suitable for them. that means patients need to pay for the office visit.
If you want it, let me know. I will ask doctor if she can only give you a shot and how much she charge you.

There is another way to take shot-waiting for the insurance to save money. If you know your husband will get a job soon with insurance benifit, do the shot after you have insurance. That is not a big deal if you take a shot a little late.

pink0325,

i'm a new mom with a newborn too, baby suri is going to be 4 weeks this friday. as opposed to your boy, suri poops a lot, we found poopies at almost every diaper change. sometimes she'll poop during the change, and during the feeding. her doctor said it's okay as long as it's no more than 12 times a day. i started pumping at 2 weeks, but i can only get 50 to 70 ml each time, hope i can build up more supply later.

nillie,

i hope these questions are not too stupid but i keep thinking of them and need some clarifications:

i bought the microsteam bags from madela too, my hubby says we should sterilize the bottles right before i pump otherwise it would defeat the purpose of sterilization. but i saw the water vapor and drops in the bottle, shouldn't those be totally dried first because that may contaminate the breast milk?

is it okay to put the milk from both breasts in the same storage bag as long as they're pumped at the same time?

i'm using the lansinoh bags and thought the markings are inaccurate. it shows a higher volume than the madela bottles?

since i've frozen milk in different volumes, say if i need to use a 40ml and a 50ml bag to make up 90ml for one feeding, after thawing them in the fridge for 24 hours, can i pour those in the same bottle for feeding?

how long should i pump each time? currently i'm pumping for about 15 mins because after i go back to work i only get 15 min breaks.

you use 2 oz of water, certainly the breast sheild and accessories are still wet.. and you need to shake it and leave them on a clean kitchen towel.. it will dry immediately.
is it okay to put the milk from both breasts in the same storage bag as long as they're pumped at the same time?
yes, you can. I did that at the beginning when my milk supply was not that much.
i'm using the lansinoh bags and thought the markings are inaccurate. it shows a higher volume than the madela bottles?
that is just a marking to give you an approximate idea how much milk in the bag, I don't believe in those markings as well.
since i've frozen milk in different volumes, say if i need to use a 40ml and a 50ml bag to make up 90ml for one feeding, after thawing them in the fridge for 24 hours, can i pour those in the same bottle for feeding?
yup.. you can.. I do that as well

I will pump until I have a good let down, that is my guideline. if I can't get a good let down, (I use Medela pump in style advance- 2 pumps), I will pump for 15 minutes and redo it may be 2-3 hours later.

Nillie,
Spencer is much much better. His blisters had bee healed but his skin is so dry and rashy now. His eczema has been triggered, I have to put a lot of vaseline on his face and his doctor gave him stronger ointment for his body. Right now, when the temperature is a bit higher or when his clothes are just a bit thick, he will keep scratching until it bleeds. I have to remind him not to do and most of the time help him to massage it to avoid him scratching it.

I had taken off for 2 weeks and stayed home to take care of him already. In these days (except those when he's really sick), he becomes so attached to me and he really behaved better, very minimal time that he'd thrown himself to the floor and he even ran to me or my mom to ask for diaper change after he pooed. I know that he's very happy to stay home with us around. Just worry what would happen when I bring him to daycare next week. It seems that this daycare cannot give him the attention he needs. I still remember how sad he looked when I picked him up 2 weeks before (the day that he started to have his blisters on the lips) after being isolated in the daycare for the whole day. I sort of want to find another daycare center for him. Last week, I took some time to look for preschool for him and 2 of them actually accept kids of Spencer's age but both of them do not have vacancy until next year. Another reason of looking for a new daycare center is the issue of potty training. The owner of the current one keeps saying that he's not ready as he cannot tell her before he wants to pee or poo. Also, she said that Spencer refuses to stand to pee and she said that it's not right to let him sit to pee as he's a boy. To me, I may rather take some time off and train him at home by myself but I just have taken a 2-week off already and I need to take at least another one in Sep this year when my mom goes back to HK for vacation.

I don't know if Spencer is really not really for potty training. He will run to me and pat his bottom or scratch his butt after he poos. Sometimes, he even goes to pull out the potty and shows us his interest to sit on it. In last week, he successfully peed in the potty 2 times (sitting). I wonder should I start letting him to sit in the potty every night.

As Spencer is over 2 years old, you can start potty training, Gabriel is also starting his potty now.. he will put his potty broad over the adult toilet, and most of the time, he did pee into the toilet.
Gabriel is sitting as well, I don't think.. sitting is wrong.. that is a process.. if Spencer needs it. but as he is running around and fully with good motor control, you can drop some cereal into the toilet and ask Spencer to pee on the target.
summer time is coming, a good time for potty training

Nillie Mami and Rosemag,

My 2-week baby is doing fine now. The breastfeeding is going well and he has lots of poo poos. I brought him to the breastfeeding support group in the hospital that I gave birth, weighed him there and he's gained some weight. So, I think my baby is getting enough.

Thanks for the support. I don't get a lot of support from my family, because in my generation (the time when I grew up), I was formula fed, so my Mom (who's in HK) always doubts if I have enough for my baby, and if my baby is getting enough.

Hi Rose-mag, thank you for the information. I will check it out.
Yes, we don't have the sense of belongings. I studied in the States for more than 7 years. I went back to Hong KOng after I graduated from University in 1999. I didn't like Hong Kong during the first two years, but then I got used to the life there. When I move back to the States this time, I miss Hong Kong and don't like the States....I guess i just need some time to get used to the life here again. Once we are settled, let's go out sometimes, ok?

pink0325,

usually i don't click into this topic, but i think i should share my experience with u as my son also had jaundice when he's a newborn, he's also a breastfed bb.

if i remember correctly, his billirubin level was level 15. his pedi (white, probably jewish), said that he didn't need to be put under the light as level 15 is the bottom-line and that he would need to be under the light if it went beyond 15. so he was discharged at the level 15. however, there was one chinese nurse there said that he should be put under the light. that pedi didn't like it when the nurse had fed him 1-2 oz of formula as i didn't have milk yet but he cried like crazy. so of course, the pedi didn't tell me to stop breastfeeding him la.

my 99 was a nurse and she scared us to death that serious jaundice could cause brain damage. although he's alert, eating and pooping fine (except easily fell asleep when being breastfed, so he ate more frequently), one day he looked "more yellow" to us, we were so scared to take him to the clinic and he had a blood test under his heel again (poor him) to test for the billirubin level. however, it's still not high enough to be put under the light.

finally his jaundice was completely gone at about 6-week old. so, it's true that it takes longer time for the exclusively breastfed babies to completely get rid of jaundice.

pink0325,

Good to hear that your son is doing fine. Breastfeeding support group is a good gathering. You can talk to other bf moms, share your concerns and get a lot of support there. Older generation always have different opinions as they believe that they know better than us and they have more experience but they usually do not see the changes in these days as compared than their good old days. My mom bf me, my brother and my sister but she still asked me to supplement with formula and told me to wean my daughter. She said that bf made her lose calcium and she had teeth problem and bone loss now. When I told her that some BK moms have bf until the kids are 2 or 3 years old, she always said that they are crazy. For me, I target to bf for 15 months after my daughter can take cow's milk and walk on her own. My little one should be too busy to play rather than to be nursed at that time.

Enjoy the moment and I believe that your son will work with you to get rid of his jaundice. Take care.

pink,
for my understanding, compare my kids with my husband's nieces, we can see the big different between them.
Although, because of my husband's careless, Gabriel did suffer from pneumonia, but he doesn't need to admit to hospital, we just give him meds at home with 100% breast milk.
peds did not want Gabriel to admit to hospital, because if he admitted, he will not be 100% skin to skin (peds did not even want me to pump the express milk for Gabriel), so I took a week off to take care of Gabriel, and he recovered in 10 days, that was imazing..
I 100% believe in breast milk.
when I have a cut, I will put the breast milk on to kill the bacteria, and that is approved by the research. you can read it from Parenting or American baby, those magazines also states BF kills germs.
also, BF kids is at least 7 points IQ score higher than formula babies.
