Welcome to Edmonton! I love people coming here. If you do not have car in the first couple of months upon arrival, I will certainly help you settle down (I can give you some rides if you need-let me know via PM). I expereniced some difficulties in settling down when I first came to Edmonton one year ago. That's why I know what problems new comers will face with adn so love to help others. Luckily, I have a lot of relatives living here for long. So they can help me a lot last year.
I have my own house and car right now. So I can get used to the life here without any problems. Even though Edmonton is big, you can make use of the free ways like White Mud Drive and Calgary Trail, having no problems driving everywhere within an hour (five main regions here: NorthEast, North West, SouthEast, SouthWest and Downtown).
Note: I am living in the very South, 10 minutes away from the Airport

The weather in Edmonton becomes more lovely. We have not got any snow since January 20. Quoting my relatives as saying, we have rarely seen such warm weather in January in Edmonton before(plus 8 degree over the past two weeks) .

Regarding the Chinese learning environment here for yr daughter. Mrs Chan is maybe correct that your daughter can listen and talk in Chinese because we have Fairchild TV in Cantonese, Fairchild Radio in Cantonese and a lot of people here who can speak Cantonese. You can also listen to the Hong Kong Radio via Internet like me. However, concerning reading or writing, I don't think your daughter can learn more than expected. It is because although there are some public & private schools providing Chinese language teaching, you can learn Mandarin only. Even in writing, you may not have as intensive practice as you are in HK/China/Taiwan. It is quite simple that you rarely use Chinese in your daily life here. You know, when you meet Chinese people here, the first language you talk to them is English. So I will have the same problem as yours because my kid may not have formal training for Chinese in the future (he is just 17-month-old now).

I just move in Edmonton a couple months. Before I move here I have some seach about school. There have Bilingual school(Mandarin and English). From Kindergarden to Grade 12. For this reason I move to here for my daughter future. I want she know Chinses too. If you want your daughter know Cantonese. She can attend to saturday or sunday course. But many children they don't want to go.
You can let you daughter to go to Bilingual School and then you can teach her cantonese. If you want have this information, let me know to pm to you.
And I have some information about here, if you want it let me know too.

I visted West Edmonton Mall once last year and know that it is the greatest mall in the world. So when I arrive in Edmonton, I like to rent an apartment there. What apartment would you suggest me to move in and what price idea on the rental?" it seems that everything in a rush, as My hubby only received short-notice of this movement but he is excited about this, as he will be promoted accordingly. However, for me, i miss Hong Kong very much, but forunately i don't have so many relatives here, as my parents are in Australia already with my brother's family.

Regarding the school arrangement for my daugther, i will search more info from the web but if you can give me more hints, it would be great.
I can drive and we will buy new cars, but i think i cannot dirve immediately when arrival because i have to apply the new driving license in Canada, right ? as i think if i cannot drive in Western Country, it seems that i am handicapped,
i need to send my daugther to school everyday , right?

I am thinking to find a job in Edmontion then, but it will be a later stage, just let me settle down all.

My daughter is 4 and 1. The older one will go to kindergarden this Sept.
In 2003, Alberta was change some rules about driving license. (The road test must be one year after you pass the writing test.) But my friend told me If you have license before your imm. you have three month for you exception period direct to go road test for one time. So you need to check.
I have a job only stay home to take care them.
I have advise for you. Before you found apartment to live, you make sure how far away from your hubby office and your home. If far away he must take a lot of time to go to work and go back home. Because in the winter time. You must take more time than summer time and roads always not easy to driving.
And School almost suggest your daughter take school bus to go school because they haven't any parking for parents. You must parking outside of school to picking up.

Tks for yr reply. I have a baby boy of 17-month-old. So he is not ready for school until he becomes five-years-old. In Canada, most kids begin their kindergarten once they are 5-yr-old, not as early as those in HK. If we want to send kids to school a little bit earlier, we can send them to pre-school. Since I am working from home, so I don't need to send my kid to pre-school. I have done some research on the school here recently. In general, at least 8 schools in Edmonton are on the top among around 20 famous schools in Canada. That means Edmonton is a good place for studying. Don't worry!

My kid may hv a chance to make friend with yr small daughter (similar age). But they do not hv chance to study in a same school because you are living in NE while we are living in SW.
You are right! I dislike the new rule that requires me to wait until April to undergo the road test after I passed the knowledge test last April. So I need my husband to drive me everywhere right now until I have got the full driver licence. However, for SaharaBB2005 who has got overseas driving experience (i.e. got HK driving license for more than 3 years), she doesn't need to wait for one year. Like my husband, he could undergo road test immediately the next day after passing the knowledge test because he has already had a HK driving license for years.

I think my small daughter is same age of your son. She almost 17mths. They can make a friend. In this summer we can meet in the park or somewhere.
Now the full licence have some diff for the old. If you want same of the old licence you must take anothere test after you got the full licence. So you need to check it.The International licence you can use 3 months after you are landing. I think they have some diff driving in HK and here. Because HK haven't snow.
You got a job at home is good. I want to go to work and meet some friends. But my husband say "no". You have job at home to take care two girls only.

Sorry! I can tell you only five good schools and their specialization as below:-
1) Strathcona High School--good at academics
2) Harry Ainlay High School--good at athletics
3) McNally High School--remarkable principal for improving school achievement results and school pride
4) St. Mary/St. Monica elementary-top all round cool school
5) St. Edmund Elementary/Junior high school-recognized in the extraordinary extracurricular category.

I did not write down the rest three schools in my note last time when I got info from the research.

It's great to hear that we will meet with each other. Pls let me know of yr contact details by PM. If going to the park gathering, we can go with Mrs. Chan who has many kids to play with ours.

I think Kinsmen Park (along the North Saskatchewan river) is a beautiful park where kids enjoy very much like my baby boy. I remember when I took him to the park last Summer, he was very excited at the fountain pool and was not willing to leave.
Because I did not have any Int'l license, I must go for the road test soonest in April this year (I passed my knowledge test last April). Of course, I want to do that after all snow has gone (easier to get a pass).

In the previous message, St. Monica and St. Mary are two individual schools. So total numbers of school I gave you are six, not five.
Here are some supplementary info for the schools:-
1) St. Monica-Separate school (elementary K-6) in Southwest
2) St. Mary-Separate school (Gr. 2-6) in Southwest
3) St. Edmund-Separate school (elementary- junior high) in Northwest
4) McNally High School in Central (near downtown)
5) Harry Ainlay High school in South (43Ave. 111St)
6) Strathcona Composite High school in South

That's why I choose to live in the South.

Mrs. Chan, tks for yr invitation. 3R family is very grateful to visit yr home. Pls give me yr address by PM. My husband will love to talk to you about music because he likes music and playing digital piano very much. You can recognise him if you always watch Chinese TV (he won the champion of "9th Canada Chinese Song-Writer Quest in Vancouver last year). The MV of his song will be broadcasted very soon in the Fairchild TV.

We don't need to wait for the Summer, maybe April is also OK because there will be no snow in Edmonton any more. Nerissa, do you think so? Saharabb2005, maybe it is too early for you to join us since you will be just arriving in Edmonton in April.

3R family ever went to Calgary, Lake Louis & Banff last Summer but not yet to Dinosaur Museum. It is a good idea that we can go there together. But after you have given a birth to your upcoming baby, you have to take a rest up to 3 months. So I think you may not go for a long trip this year, right?
