usbaby i wish my daughter is like yours, she doesn't want to nap during the day and doesn't sleep very long at night neither.

i think my daughter eats less than before too, i'm feeding her less frequently, like 5 or 6 times a day, and sometimes she refuses the second breast. we are looking for daycare for her now and one of the chinese lady we saw told us to increase her feeding by an ounze per feeding every day so she'll sleep through the night, one of her babies who's only 4 months old is drinking 9 oz already. it scares me because she seems like to overfeed the babies just to get them to sleep.

my daughter did develop a fever the night after her 2-month immunization. it was 100.8 degrees so i gave her a dose of tylenol, but as soon as i gave it, she vomited immediately, it was pretty forceful and with lots of milk, we called the advise nurse at the hospital and she told us as long as the baby is acting normal otherwise, responding to us, and has the appetite to eat, it should be fine. i don't understand how your pedi "make sure" there'll be no side effects. a mild fever is actually listed as one of the side effects of the shots, as well as irritability, mild redness or swelling of the injection site.

Hi nursing moms,

My little baby is 2 months 3 weeks now. Breastfeeding is going well. I breastfeed him 8 times a day.

I do have a question. As he's growing and he might (hopefully!!) sleeplonger at night. Do I still have to breastfeed him 8 times a day? Sodoes it mean I have to nurse him more frequently during day time? Sofar my baby still wakes up for feeding every 3 hours during night time.If he starts to sleep longer hours at night, do I NEED to pump milk tomaintain the supply? Or just pump it if my breasts fill too full andpainful?

Depends.. if you really want to be a 100% bf mom. if you insist to be a full time BF mom for at least a year or more, I would suggest you to do so. I did that, for both of my angels.
every 2 hours on the first months, every 3 hours since 2nd months, then I did not wake up my son if he can sleep longer at night, instead, I woke up and pump out my milk around the clock.
by Gabriel about 5.5 months old I can pump at least 8 oz on each breast. for every 5 hours, if I pump every 6 hours, I could get about 22oz from both breast. but that is really hurt.
I don't suggest you to wait until you have engorgement to pump, as your breast will send a message to your brain to reduce the milk production. Try not to wait until the last minute. that is not a correct way to stimulate and maintain you milk flow.

Thanks, Nillie Mami.

I will continue to breastfeed exclusively until my baby is ready to wean, not me, haha. I breastfed my older boy for 26 months, but I forgot most everything. And as time passes, some new ideas might have come out. It's good to get some input here.

BTW, I have an electric pump (Evenflo Duo or something.) How do I clean or wash the set? Just wash it in hot water with detergent? Do I need to boil it?

Pink,
do you mean the breast shield and the tubing?
you can wash them with warm water, clean with bottle cleaner, just like you wash your bottle, then steam it in the sterilizer.
I used the medela, they come with the microwave bags, so I just use clear water to rise it, then steam them inside microwave. easy.
I did not steam the tubing because it has never got any milk or water inside.

Nillie Mami,

You're right. However, I don't have a sterilizer. Any good ones to suggest? How about those that can be put in the microwave?

BTW, I know there's a weight chart for breastfed baby. Do you have a copy? I'd like to keep track of my baby's growth.

pink,
sure, we had our own growth chart for BF baby.

http://forum.baby-kingdom.com/viewthread.php?tid=692065&extra=page%3D1&page=5

check with the first message

any sterilizer is good, I use the babiesrus brand only [speically for baby] durable, reliable, and price reasonable. .. and it was belongs to Amanda.. and I use it for Gabriel.. can't believe.. we use it for 5 years!
you can go to babiesrus to search, or just go online. buy online with free shipping site. that is cool (if you don't have time to go out)

hello, my baby is 3 months and 2 weeks now, but she doesn't seem to have a good appetite. the time she spends on my breasts are progressively shorter, and sometimes she only nurses on one breast.

she gets distracted so easily even i try to nurse her in a quiet envorinment, she'll suck, then release and look around, and suck again.

i'm going back to work in september so i've all the pumped breastmilk in the frezzer, but when i try to give her a bottle she wouldn't drink from it, either squirms around, pushes it out with her tongue, or simply doesn't swallow. i'm afraid she's only getting 10 oz a day .....

little smart girl..

How many times you nurse a day? How many minutes you nurse each time?
When Gabriel and Amanda was 3 months old, they both took 1 breast only.. so I pumped the rest.
woo.. you return to work at Sept but not yet able to establish bottle feed, you gonna run out of time. Let main caregiver to give the bottle. you must stay away from her sight. she gonna be hungry, so the caregiver can give the bottle. that is the way to learn.
now.. during the day, you gonna give her all bottles, and learn to pump in special time frame, which fit your job.
plus, role play!!! -- pretend you are in office, how much space you can use to pump, you may need a test drive back to office, to see where you got any spot to pump you milk, and you got a sink to wash you hands, microwave to steam your supplies, freezer to keep your milk..

i'm nursing anywhere from 5 to 8 times a day, usually 6 times, and about 10 to 15 mins each time. but suri is not "actively sucking" for the whole time.

thanks for reminding me about practicing pumping. i'll bring the steam bag to work, but i still need to use soap detergent, right?

i'll try to give her more bottles now, but my husband is not persistent, after she refuses the bottle for 5 mins and cries, he'll give up and ask me to feed her.

I don't use any soap at work, I use the clear clean warm water wash them, then as per instruction, I add 2 oz water into Medela steam bag, put my breast shields inside, and then steam for 3 minutes.
same as my kids.. about 10-15 mins.
you need to force the mean care giver to take up the job from now on. as you will not be there no more during the day!

update: i've been back to work for 2 weeks now and so far my baby (4.5 months) is still drinking my breastmilk exclusively. my milk inventory is depleting very fast though because i can only pump once during an 8-hour shift at work and her nanny is feeding 3 to 4 times at her house.

i'm afraid that very soon i'll not be able to keep up with the demand. even though i've been pumping like crazy during my days off, i don't get a lot each time. last week i went to a whole food store and bought a box of the "mother's milk" teabag and hopefully it'll boost the milk production.

one thing that upset me very much was that i found out the nanny was microwaving my breastmilk to warm it up!!! my first concern was the hotspots and it may burn my daughter's mouth. i tried to explain to her that the microwave won't heat evenly and can be dangerous.

the nanny is an older chinese-vietnamese lady who has years of experience in baby-sitting. and she always points out what we've done wrong, e.g. not putting clothes, so everything she said was like the "authority" and she said she makes sure the milk wasn't too hot by putting a few drops on the back of her hand and she'll pour the milk back and forth in two bottles to make sure the heat is distributed evenly. she said it takes too long to heat it under hot water that's why she uses the microwave.

my next concern was that all the antibodies in my milk are now "killed" and that just defeats the whole purpose of giving breastmilk. i was so upset to learn that my daughter has been drinking that "zero antibody milk" for that last 2 weeks.

we finally agree to buy a bottle warmer and put it at her place, and just hope that she'll use it. does anyone know which bottle warmer is compatible with the playtex drop-ins (disposable bags)? i couldn't find any on the internet..... thanks a lot....

the nanny is a liar.. I used Playtex drop in for Amanda since she was about 2-3 months old till she was 2 years old.
it takes about 1 minute to warm the milk by the water.
unless it is frozen. Also, if she pull out the milk from freezer, she supposed to defrose the milk in fridge for 8-12 hours, before she warm it up.
we use Avent warmer, use the 1degree, will be good fit.

yes, sad thing is we don't know if she'll use the warmer or not even if we buy it. i was really upset by this and can't believe an experienced nanny would not know about the danger of microwaving milk.

at least, you have made your offer to her.
once she used microwave, the nutrient inside the BF disappeared.
so, you should warn her not to do that again.
it is not the burning thing as her and your concern, as she knows about it.. the concern at this point is nutrition.

babytomato,
Sorry to hear about your nanny. Watch out for Vietnamese nanny. I don't want to be racially discriminating any person but I was told by many people that a lot of Vietnamese nannies are using some stupid ways to take care of baby just beause of laziness. When I looked for a daycare for my son, I was referred to visit a Vietnamese Chinese nanny's family daycare. All the kids in her daycare are abnormally quiet. No one would dare to leave the bed without being told after he or she woke up. In the nanny's words, she loves babies and all babies love her and her husband. But, her husband was so careless that he put a cup of tea next to a swing and a baby was sleeping inside. When my son went near him, he grabbed the cup and the tea split on that baby. Luckily, the tea was cold. The nanny's husband was too slow to react.

Also, the baby girl sleeping in the swing was a typical example of baby like your daughter and my daughter (refuse to drink from bottle). What that nanny do was to let her sit/sleep in the swing and feed her. She mentioned that when the baby's being swinged, she would easily fall to sleep and would be more easier to accept bottle. Once the baby fell to sleep, she kept her in the swing. When it's time for feeding, of course, that little baby had to be in the swing. So, most of the time, the baby girl stayed in the swing.

For breastfeeding, I had talked to more than one nanny about my daughter refusing to use bottle. One of the nannies I met told me that she will insist on the baby to be wean from breastfeeding. Otherwise, she will refuse to accept that baby to her daycare because it will be a lot of work. Therefore, I think that your nanny just concern about having less work rather than nutrition to your daughter. Even though you buy her a bottle warmer, she possibly may not use it but it's better for you to raise your concern and your offer. Would you consider to look for another nanny? Other than using microwave, do you notice anything strange in addition?

we've been to many places before we picked this nanny. we thought about hiring a live-in nanny or a daycare center but there were too many concerns with these options.

we chose to go with this "a yi" because 1) she's referred by a friend's friend's friend's friend. 2) there's only one other kid at her place and she'll take a max of 3 children. she said she doesn't advertise anywhere, all her clients are by referral only, if someone left, she'll just wai t to the next child. 3) she speaks cantonese 4) she seems to have experience, especially in caring for infants.

so far she's been taking care of suri for 2.5 weeks and suri seems to be happy at her place. she cried for a couple days when we dropped her off but it's getting better now. and according to the nanny suri is eating more and more. but at the beginning the nanny wanted me to stop breastfeeding too. i told her i'd not give up the morning and the last meal but we can use the bottle during the day time at home.

the main reason for me to insist breastfeeding is for its nutritional value so i was extremely upset when i saw her put the milk in the mircowave. i don't know if this is how people warm up the milk in the past but i do find her ways of taking care children somewhat old fashion. e.g. she told me that she has a walker so suri can use it when she's a little older. i wanted to tell her that a walker is no longer recommended and please don't use it for my daughter.

i just don't want to be too "straight" because for the whole time she always "taught" us not to do this or that and just believes whatever she does is right. sometimes i wish i have family here to help me. it's almost impossible to find someone you can totally trust....

babytomato, don't be upset that you don't have family members to help. Sometimes it's better to use a nanny because after all you are the boss, you can fire her and find another one. Even family members (your mom or your mother-in-law) will not take care of your angel exactly the same way like you do. Sometimes it's even harder to tell them not to do this or that because they will say "that's the way I brought you up!" It depends, some older generation are more open to new ideas, but some aren't.

Maybe you can watch for another week, if the nanny doesn't change even you requested, you can look for another one. It's time consuming but it's important that you feel comfortable leaving your child with the nanny.

Hi Nillie,

just checking for my friend. her baby is now 1 month old, she used to skin to skin her baby around 40 mins for each feeding, then top up with formula if her girl is still not full yet. however, her baby's throwing up seriously, the doctor said she's easy to throw up and asked my friend only to skin to skin 20 mins, her baby is not full with 20 mins so my friend needs to give her formula after each feed, she's feeding with this pattern all day and night! is there any way to improve the situation so that she won't need to top up with formula every time?

thanks.
