May I asked I plan to do ivf next cycle, but unfortunately just find out my husband will be out of town during d9-d12 which may fall on my egg retrieval day. Is it possible to freeze the sperm for storage? Does it affect the quality and outcome a lot? I am really old now I don't want to wait for another cycle.
Yes, it is possible to freeze the sperm in most cases, unless your hubby has very very low count and motility. Cycles using frozen sperm have equal success chance.

Thanks for your prompt reply, then I can let him confirm the air ticket now, anyway he has to go because it's a business trip. Anyway u alleviate a lot of my anxiety. many thanks.
Do you have diabetes, or had gestational diabetes before? I am not too sure why metformin is used if you don't have pcos nor high BMI. Steroids are probably for the immune system.
It is still the best to ask your doctor what your prescriptions are for, which is your right as the client. Sometimes asking the pharmacist when you are given the medicine may help.

Dear cutecutetown,
I don't have PCOS and I have normal BMI, will these medicine still help?
i did not have diabetes before too.... but kind of the nurse mentioned that metformin is for prevention of miscarriage, but i'm not sure whether this helps implantation.
also, anything i can do in the meantime so as to increase my successful rate in the coming FET (probably in May)? thanks again.
I assume you will be utilizing your own natural cycle for the FET, so your doctor may not give you any injections or pills to take. Some doctors will, but as compared to the stimulated cycle when you first got your egg retrieval, the dosage is minimal.
How to prepare in order to increase success chance? The success relies partially on the embryos too, which is somewhat outside your control. For your own body, try to keep stress at a low level, rest well and get some exercises (like the TV commericial on healthy living says, half an hour a day if you can, and do exercises that can make you sweat). When you feel good, success comes easy, or easier than you think.
In terms of what to eat, a balanced diet is good enough. Some take multivitamins and folic acid, which should be good for women whether you try to get pregnant or not. Drink water instead of sugary drinks.

Not sure for what purpose you are seeing 中醫+ acupuncture; don't know the formula of the herbs you are taking. Definitely talk to your ivf doctor and see what his/her advice will be. In the mean time, if you feel the herbs may be "too strong", stop taking it.
I always find that if you believe in acupuncture, your belief does the good on you, not the actual acupuncture. I am not its believer, but I do not object ivf women getting acupuncture. If you do it just because others say it helps, or because others have ivf success after doing acupuncture, then you may want to think again.
After an embryo transfer you will often be given 0.5-1 hr bed-rest. Even without the bed rest, your chance should not be compromised. So, you can go to work on the same day, although I understand that most women will prefer to take the day off or the next few days off.
If you have a job and need to work during the 2 weeks of bingo wait, try not to over-busy yourself. Too much stress is not good, but no work probably gets you to worry too much as you have the time to ponder on unnecessary and negative thoughts.
Generally, take things easy, sleep well at night, and maintain a balanced lifestyle.

Thank you very much for your psycholoigcal support. Your words are "more usefull and effective" than our words to her. Her emotion is better now but one more question:-
(1) her "M" comes 2 days before she finished the two weeks' 塞陰 hormone (the hormone for better implantation). Is it due to the embroyo had implanted but miscarriage?
Million thanks!

Dear Bobomok,
Please tell you sister that as long as she followed her doctor's instructions and took medication accordingly, she had done all she could. In fact, she had done her best already; there ...
With 塞陰 hormone, "M" will come earlier if the embryo(s) have not implanted. It is rather sad to tell, but true, in some cases Miss M will return 8-10 days after ET.

I only had around 35min bed rest as I have to go to toilet:-P
Yes, I went to office today. But after lunch, I don't know why but felt very very sleep. Is that normal? Or just "Monday Symptom?"
My tummy is very very big after injection. (before, just big, but not very very) really like pregnant. Many air in my stomach. I can only walk very slow becuase "扯" feeling still exist. Is that normal? I cannot fasten my button. Don't know what to wear tomorrow.

I think you are just tired, and with a little "Monday symptom".
Since you can't even button up your pants, I suggest you call in your clinic to get checked. You may have a mild ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Sometimes it happens after all those injections which stimulate egg production. Let me know afterwards if you are ok.

I have been a fans of your column and this time it is my turn to seek for your kind advice. I am over 40 and had my first IVF done last year. I have two blastocyst transferred and one succeeded. Unfortunately, I was miscarriaged at 7 weeks. I still have four frozen blastocyst. Here are my question.
1) are the success rate of frozen blastocyst transfer different from fresh transfer?
2) since I do not have regular cycle, doctor suggest to use Hormonal replacement method. Are the success rate similar to other method like natural cycle
3) since I am over 40, should I start another fresh IVF ccycle now to save more good embryos instead of putting back the frozen ones? I am just worried if these failed, my ovarian function will be worsened with age and not able to produce good eggs any more.
1) Some quote frozen embryos (in general) to be lower than fresh; that's probably because we do lose some embryos due to damage by the freezing and then thawing processes. As long as the embryos/blastocysts survive after thaw, they give similar success chance.
2) All we need is to have an endometrium that is receptive to the embryos, the time is called the "implantation window". In order to do this, we either use the natural cycle or the hormonal replacement method. Both will give a timely cycle which will then be easy to monitor and find the implantation window. So, success rate is similar.
3) Blastocysts are good embryos in the sense that they are about ready to implant. Being your age, you are bound to have some embryos that are not chromosomally normal (not correct in the number of chromosomes due to errors when the embryonic cells divide). I suspect your miscarriage is caused by this reason. While you still have 4 blastocysts, utilize them first; they are probably good enough for 2 times of FET. Your lucky babe(s) may be in among them.
As you said, your ovaries may be getting worse; but practically, they won't resign overnight. So, assume in the worst case scenario where you finish all the frozen blastocysts without bingo, you can still start a new IVF within half a year. This time frame is reasonable enough.
Good luck in your coming FET.
