hi rubytang,
I have some personal suggestions: -
1) If you buy a car, you should consider many things. First of all, is it expensive if you need to fix it? Some of the cars are so expensive for maintenance, either parts or labor costs. If you buy a new car and it's still under warranty, you have no problem to bring it back to dealer for repair. If you are not familiar to car or you don't know any machanics for car repair, buying a new car would help you to be freed from problems for a few years. You also need to consider if it consume a lot of gas for running. Models like Toyota Corolla, Tercel or those electricity cars save gas for driving. You may not need a big car or van but you should consider a spacious one so that sometimes, you can accommodate to have 1 or 2 guest on board and you have enough space for shopping or at least room for lugguages if you need to pick up your husband from airport.
2) For credit building, if you have an account in a bank for over 1 year, usually it is no problem for you to apply for a credit card. If not, you can open a check card first and get a credit card later. Once you get the credit card, use it several times but don't pay off the whole payment at the beginning. After 2-3 months of using, you can start paying full for each payment. It's the way to build up credit. If you pay full payment from the very beginning, it's not easy for you to build up credit score because the bank needs to know that you have the ability to pay AS WELL AS to pay it on time. So, remember not to let the bill overdue which will affect your credit score. Also, don't have too much credit cards or affiliate cards or shop cards, it will affect your credit if you have so many cards oweing money at the same time.
3) If you plan to buy a house in the future, hold more than one credit card. Otherwise, even though your credit score is high, the bank still consider it an issue. Consideration includes both the length and the depth of credit history.
4) Watch out for giving out your SSN if you need to buy a car. If you pay at one time with no loan, it may not be necessary for the dealer to ask for your SSN. My friend's wife bought a car from a dealer and she needs loan. One of the workers in that company stole her identity and applied for several credit cards. Not until she found out that there're some abnormal bills that she suspected that her ID had been stolen. It took her so long to fix the problem and it still hurt her credit.
