I also live in Vancouver and I have a 17 mths old son. What is your budget for daycare? I know the cost of hiring a filipino nanny in Canada is minimum $1200 which includes gov't tax. It's an option which you may consider because beside taking care of your baby, the nanny can also help do housework so you and your hubby don't have to do.

Sorry for interrupting, I'm here with my baby for a short visit and is planning to take some portrait pictures at a studio.
I've been to "Here's my baby" at the Promenade (Toronto), anybody tried before? Do you think it's worth it?

I need to do it quick as I'll be back in HK on Dec 8th, Help!!

I don't know how much should I pay for private child care, but I know child care centre charging me $833 per month, exclude diaper and food. I think I should not pay more than that for private child care. To do house work, I can handle it and my salary is too low at that moment, so I don't want to spend too much on child care. By the way, I haven't got my driving licence, so I want to put my baby where either close to my house or convenient for traffic. Besides, my job is quite demanding and I need to have overtime very often, so no gurantee I can pick up my child on time.

How about you? Are you a working mom or staying home mom? My baby never left me before and I worry that we may have hard time at the begining. Can you share any experience with me?

I'm so sorry that I could not reply to u earlier. I could not get hold of my godson till Friday night, and my home PC got connection problem...
so sorry :-(

anyway, I did not go too. The parade was on Sat Morning from 10:00 (main street at Unionville) - 12:00pm (thru' HWY7 and ends up in Centennial park).

It was a small parade and my godson's air cadet team being kicked out as over-crowded of the parade group...

he mentioned there may be another one for the richmond hill region that he could join... so just wait and see

Hmmm...it's kind of difficult in your case. I think most daycare require parents to pick up their child at a specific time, around 5pm or something. If your job requires OT, then you have to ask your hubby or someone to pick your child up.

Best thing for you is to have a relative or friend take care of your child for a minimum pay. If you don't have anyone available, there are ads on the paper about some mothers who are available to take care of other's baby for a smaller fees than normal daycare. You may consider that!

As for me, I'm lucky to be a stay at home mom. I never really separated with my baby beside the 4 days vacation I spent with hubby and I'm also lucky to have my mother take care of him while we were away.

Have you try post an ad. in your neighborhood or local newspaper? The cost will be alot cheaper. (approx. $150 - $200/week include meal - CASH)

yes i am in hk now, that sounds good for young adult to work in these industry rather than Food and beverage industry in canada, i have lived in the uk for a while i know most of chinese working in restaurant even they are quite well educated, i think that is wasting their academic knowledge, and i always think about the reasons they are willing to work in the restaurant coz people could work there even not educated a lot

I did put an ad on the community house today and now waiting for any response. As my daughter is too young (13 mths), none of child care people willing to give her meal and because we don't have car, we can only stick to those close to our house. Currently I found one greek lady nearby who charge $750/mth..excludes meal.

If I paid by cash, will I get any child care allowance from the gov't? As you are working too, who help you to take care of your baby? Can you claim any money from the gov't? I read that if the total income exceed $4000 a mth, then we won't get any allowance. Does this rule apply to Ontario as well?

You are so lucky to have someone to help you. I don't have any relatives or friends here, so I try to get help from here. In fact, I also prefer to have a stay home mom like you to look after my daughter. Firstly I don't believe those home-run child care can really pay attention to my child as one mum may look after 7 kids in one time. I doubt how can they have time to feed my daughter. But the point is how can I found out those stay home mom which is close by our house.

i am in toronto and i pay cash to my babysitter. you need to have official receipts to claim for this childcare allowance (there is a column in the tax form for this). if you take you daughter to a childcare centre, then no problem you will get the receipt and claim for childcare allowance.
however, i doubt that if the babysitter will give you any receipt (or will that be accepted as official receipt if she really gives you one - i have not made any clarification for this). those people who babysit for kids accept cash only; this is the reason they need not pay tax. i have once asked my babysitter can i claim for childcare allowance. her reply is if i put this in the tax form, she may need to pay tax; then i need to pay a higher cost for babysitting to cover her loss.

p.s. oscar has a philippine maid at home.

Oscar, how much you are paying for your maid? Does she work 6 days and do you need to pay for her air ticket? Can you claim any tax from the gov't?

My girls are 5 1/2 and 9. I pay $200/week. They go after school only. However, if your daughter is younger, the babysitter may charge more. I am not sure if you can claim for childcare allowance from a home-run child care, you can ask them direct. To my understanding, it seems that if one is babysitting more than a certain amount of children at home, then this kind of home-run child care needs to register with govt???? My babysitter only takes care of the two of them.

My case is very different from yours, but I wonder how you handle your two girls when they are 1 yr old?
Recently I found a home run child care which only charge me $550 a month and she is willing to keep my child after six as well as on Saturday. It is very good and the price is reasonable. We visited her before and the place is quite clean and kids look normal to us. We were thinking to use it as I want my baby to meet other kids.
Regarding for child care, she is gov't register but I am not sure whether I can claim as she told us it is not eligible if one of the spouse is not working/studying, but since my hubby doesn't really like to be a stay home daddy, we desperately need child care regardless any allowance. Compare to other child care, I think she is one of the cheapest and she is willing to do drop off child care as well. If drop off, she is charging $4/hr and min 4 hrs.

we came to toronto for more than 4 years. my elder daughter was about 5 and younger was about 1. the elder will go to school and the younger stayed with the babysitter for whole day. i have been using this babysitter for more than 4 years.
