Dear Nillie_Mami,

Regarding the re-entry permit, my niece told me that if I just left US over 1 year, then I need to apply, if it is just within one year, it was not necessary to apply it, isn't it ?? But I remember you told me that if I left USA over 6 months, then I need to apply it, right ? Please correct me if my understanding is wrong, thanks!

Regards,
Chrisdia

Dear Chrisdia,
For the I-131, it is good for 2 years, for people who will leave US over 1 year.

For reason I mentioned about over 6 months, because many people want to get their citizenship on time. If you leave US more than 6 months, you need to count the date from the last entry.. for another 4 years and 1 day. Therefore, I don't suggest people to leave US more than 6 months.
If you constantly leave US more than 6 months, even within a year every year. The officer can suspect you that you are not willing to be resident in US, and they can ask you to go to the immigration count. Then you need to bring a lot of document to support yourself.
If you don't plan to get your citizenship after you get your green card for 5 years. You can be a frequent flyer.. just as we mentioned..
1. leave US less than a year, over 6 months.. nothing to do.. (but do not do it too often)
2. leave US over 1 year, apply I-131 while you are still in US
3. if you plan to apply nationalization after you got your green card 5 years, do not leave US more than 6 months in a roll.
You can travel everywhere every year.. but.. to consider as a resident, you sure need to live here more than 180 days a year.

My husband's company will move to North East Manhanttan, NY in January 2010, tentatively and we need to find some information about apartments in NY. We are looking for the areas that are safe, but the rent is not that expensive. Do you have any ideas, information or recommendations? Thanks!

if you would provide which area and needs you wanna look for, that will be easier for us to help you.. as New York is very big.. and also, do you drive, or just take public transportation. Be honest, in general, MTA (public transportation) here is sucks!
Are you going to rent for a few months or on going?
How big of the appartment are you looking for?
Which boro.... Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island??
Rent---
most expensive - Manhattan (but if you don't have a car) very conveinece.
expensive- Queens-- long traffic for your husband.. if close to Flushing, nice place, good food.
fair - Brooklyn-- Don't choose close to 8Ave, Ave U or 86 street, very dirty... like Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tae.. but very conveinece for grocegies shopping.
cheap - staten island - have ferry go straight to Manhattan, and express bus to Manhattan. Many nice area to choose from, detached house every where.. the feel like you live in Melbourne, or some other European countries.. In hk, it would be compare like "Hong Lok Yuen" in Tai Po. But no China Town, only 1 Chinese supermarket at South Ave.
** Do not think about Bronx** 100% not recommend. 100% unsafe.

It will be great if you go online and do some searching by yourself now, and tell us where you find and what you want, then we can give you commend.. otherwise.. we have no clue and don't know how to help at all.

check this out..

http://new-york-rent.com/

http://www.equityapartments.com/searchresults.aspx?geographyId=17160

http://new-york-city.apartmenthomeliving.com/

http://www.sublet.com/spider/lecitylist.asp?state=newyork

http://newyork.apartments.com/

http://www.anchornyc.com/

These are just some of the websites.. when you go to the search engine and type in "appartment rental in new york city" then you will get thousands...

Do not choose anything from Long Island, Weschester or any upstates in New York, he will not able to go to work within 2 hours with traffic as he is working in city.
Choose something close.. as I mentioned.
Do not think that Brooklyn will be closer than Staten island if your husband has to work in mid town. as Staten Island has ferry and express bus to avoid traffic, but Brooklyn doesn't.
Rent at mid town (manhattan)... $3000 and up (with mice inside the appartment--cheapest --$3000).. friends live in those $4500 per month, has mice problem and keep changing their appartment which did not really help..
Rent in Queens around $2000 - $4000
Rent in Brooklyn around $ 1500 and up
Rent in Staten Island around $950 and up
Sure beside the rent, you still have other fee to pay for.. and really depends on what kind of housing or location you chose from.
That is the study I did, or you can ask other BK moms here for other opinions.

my suggestion.. if you planned to stay long term..
1. rent close to your husband's job.. then search for a Long term rental. And the meanwhile, learn and get your driver license.
2. if you have children, you need to look for school, daycare and play group.

** check with the size of appartment and see how many people you are coming here in NY..
as they have Studios for family of 2..
if you have 1 kids for short term, get those 1 bedroom. for long term then get those 2 bedrooms**

Dear Nillie_Mami,

My husband's office is near 96th street, I think it is the upper east side of Central Park. We haven't had any baby yet, so we think that we will search the 1 bedroom apartment first.

Another question, I want to know if it is the US's culture to add my husband's surname in front of my surname? Or just add my husband's surname in front of my first name? Is it usual to use my own surname and name? When I filled in the form DS-230, I did not check the box that adding my husband's name to my name as i think it will be complicated if i want to find job here while my certificates show my own name.

Clay,
check this out..
MTA -trip planner.
it can tell you how long you will commute on traffic.

http://tripplanner.mta.info/

We checked.. many location.. Brooklyn and Staten Island do not make a big different.
Queens may be closer. however, Train No.7 is not reliable, it always close when it snows, windy or heavy rain.
Also, it depends on where you live.. does your apartment or house close to subway or express bus. At Staten Island.. you live close from the Exit 13 (bridge exit) or far from it?
For Queens and Brooklyn, you live close to subway or need to transit with bus or another subway..

Just like in HK if you live in 長洲, far from Pier and work at Causeway Bay.. or You live at 鴨利州 (need just 1 express bus), 西營盤(take van or bus transit with MTR), or 柴灣 (MTR) (I guess that you know what I mean)
remember.. it doesn't count.. miss bus.. subway delay.. because of crash.. weather.. etc.

my fat bear Husband checked..
Staten Island to 96st. with X1 and transit in mid town to 96 street = 1 hours 15 min
Brooklyn to 96st. (different point) with subway and transit = 1.5 hours
Queens to 96 st. (different point) = about 1 hour.

for your last name..
I did not change my last name until my children go to school.. just to stop the confusion.
Here in US, many working wives keeps their maiden name. You don't need to change if you don't want to.

clay,
very welcome.. as we are here to help..
at this period, go out and eat all the good food.. as the price is so "reasonable".... you will never able to get the same food here with the same price..
French, Japanese, Korean, Thai food.. all my favorite.. but very expensive here (if you convert them in to HK currency).
It will be snowing (normally) when you guy arrived in NYC, do not bring any wool underwear, otherwise, you ended up with all the rash over your body because we have heat here everywhere.
Once you arrive, I will tell you where to shop for clothings.. Woodbury commons, about 1.5 hours away from city, is one of the biggest factory outlet in NY state. Nice quality and good price. Get your goose jacket, snow boots, and other items.. you will save a lot of money.

Hi, Nillie_Mami,

After comparing the rent and the commute time, we think that we would rent an apartment in Astoria or Sunnyside in Queens. Besides, my husband's colleagues suggested Journal Square in Jersey City as it is convenient to go to Manhattan via PATH. Do u know anything about those areas?

Sure, after we move there, i will contact you. Besides, my face is getting dry after i got here. More wrinkles appear on my face and around the eye areas, any good skin care products can be suggested for me?:)

Jersey city.. Have to depend on the neighbourhood, some areas are dangerous. Be caution. Most areas are for black and spanish, so have to pay extra caution. Government over that tried very hard to re-build the area, it really depends on your luck.
We just went there last Saturday, to watch the Disney on Ice at the Purdential center (?? error spelling). We are the only chinese there.

If it closes to Edge water, those apartments are beautiful.. Japenese town.. with the ferry to go to Manhattan.
Queens is good, we have a lot of BK moms there, over 85% BK families live at Queens.

I use SKII sign treatment, which moist my skin very well.. for western product.. I also use Olay Total care at day time.

Clay,
sure not banned. You can get SKII at Sak 5th Ave. But who will pay that price??
You can get it at chinatown or order online.
I do it online, from http://www.sasa.com as they provide free shipping. I got that info from my co-worker, as I work in the Asian team, so all staffs speak Chinese.
If you will come by, may come and visit us, please call ahead.. as we may go to Woodbury commons to do factory outlet shopping this weekend.
