其實我唔係好明, 我未試過同時裝兩個OS, 如果想加多一個, 例如win 7, 咁用緊o個個係咪都要一併重裝? 而用VM就唔使? 因為新OS只在虛擬機器內運行?
Let's say u have a new PC running Win7 and want to install WinXP. If that's the case, u don't need VM. All u need to do is install XP (after Win7 installed) as usual. Upon installing XP, windows will detected u r attempting to install another O/S. Assume u have a 500G hard drive, windows will ask u how much u want to reserve (or partition) for ur XP. Say, u want to reserve 100G. Once complete partition, simply install XP as usual. Next time u boot up ur PC, you'll be prompted to boot either from 7 or XP. This is known as dual boot.
The trick is, if u boot from 7 and under Windows Explorer, u'll find ur C:\ installed with 7 (with 400G) and D:\ installed with XP (with 100G). Meanwhile, if u boot from XP, under Windows Explorer, u'll find ur C:\ installed with XP (100G) and D:\ installed with 7 (400G).
Dual boot allows u to take advantages of all physical hardware, say, your high-end display card, all available memory (ignore the 4G limit due to 32bit), all CPU resources, ...
Now, for VM. In VM, u'll be prompted to create a logical hard disk for your VM machine. Say, you've created a logical disk with 20G. But if you check the size of this logical disk drive from your actual PC, you'll find it consume merely 5 - 10G! With that, u could create lots of VM as it only consume less space. Meanwhile, VM machine could not enjoy your physical hardware like high-end display card, available memory (u have to assign some to your physical PC), ... What happened is that ur VM merely support true color and therefore, u could not run high-end game at VM.
The true VM purpose allows u to create a number of "computers" (or servers, to be specific) without purchasing the hardware. Say, u want to have three servers and interconnect them, two installed with Windows 2008 and one installed with Windows 2003. In old days, administration have to physically purchase three servers and switches. Now, with VM, administrator merely need to purchase a powerful server. Next, install VM in this server and create three VMs. As such, administrator will save lots of overhead like backup tapes, office space, maintenance cost, manpower, ... So, VM is target for business user, rather than home user and the purpose is to save cost.
Of course, as mentioned by CCD, VM allows u to testing run some software. So, one day, u want to try Win8. With VM, all u need to do is to create a partition in the VM and then install Win8. If u don't like it, simply delete this partition and u r done. On the other hand, if u employ dual boot methodology, u have to physically create a logical partition and install Win8. When removing Win8, u have to go to Disk Management and delete the partition, which is clumsy (and risky). That's y CCD said VM allows him to test run s/w.
