so far I knew- canada have
elementary school - grade 1 -8 = P1 - F2 in HK
Secondary school - grade 9 - 12 = F3 - F6 in HK

can't remember what is the proper name for the grade 3 & 6 test, but they test, english, maths, and common knowledge
if you got over 85+ or so. you could apply for the gifted school (like the talent class or so in HK) to have better academic development.

like HK, if you go to the public school, you could only select those in your living district, but if you go for private, then could go whichever school you select.

if you are catholic, you are more flexible, you could select school within your region... that is (like - east kowloon, instead of just Kwun Tong).

as I don't have any kid, all these info is from my god children, hope this help...

chinese school - run by government (only on Sat) or private tuition (with license from government) run on their own schedule, evening class, sat or sun, just pick whatever class is convenience to you. Also, you could pick cantonese class or mandarin class....

My son is 5 now. We are also planning to go before 10 and I agree that it is more easier for him to adopt the new life.

My case is very similar to yours, only that we have 2 kids, so burden is heavier. I also think that studying in Canada is much more happier and productive than in HK, yet it is almost impossible for us to find a decent job there. So now I have to put my kids to study in international schools to prepare them adapting to future study in Canada. I hope to send them there to study high schools (year 9 onwards) in a few years' time. My elder kid is already going to join secondary school in HK.

Which primary school are you going to choose for your son?

Hi WYmom,

係第二度見你講Think, 你小朋友都係Think讀? 我仔係Laguna City Think whole day class and will attend the prep. class in Think Kowloon Schoo in the coming Sept. For primary school, I prefer local school but still under research of which school is suitable for my son or may switch back to int'l school.

You are right, my younger girl is studying at Think Mei Foo and will be LK by Sept. I have similar thinking as you re primary school. Hope you find a suitable one and hope you can let me know later just for reference as I have to search as well after a year. :-P

My case is similar to yours as well. My son is 3 yrs old and I'm still thinking what kind of school to send him to for primary education, traditional or international. I want him to learn more chinese but the examination and homework burden is too much on kids. I really want to move back but I don't think my husband can find a good job there(compare to the one here). Maybe in 10 yrs time, we'll move back for secondary education. It's such a difficult decision

Sorry I'm a passer-by and would like to ask if you parents applied any Canadian identification documents for your kids. I know we can get the Certificate of citizenship, then Canadian passport, how about SIN / Medicare card?

i don't bring much kitchen wares - 2 cooking pots - 1 is a big one for making soup. there other is for hot pot.. a chinese chopper.. and that's it..

all my cooking utensil were bought in here. as in Toronto, we use electric range (instead of the real fame gas range back in HK). so the wok and other china pot does not work well here...

the rice bowl, plate and others, too delicate to bring - and it is not expensive here. just buy those from dollars shop and could put to microwave too...

but for those cook ware that are mircowave safe - are expensive in HK.. so I personally would think buy here ...

hkmothermum, not sure your friend's boy. my god son - when he was at 10, he likes war games, Computer games.. those that you find in HK might not be that suitable for him as they don't play here. may be you could come first and take him to the mall and let him pick up whatever he like.

or else, the baseball cap, t-shirt or sport shoes... those are the things they like.. (at least for my god sons)
