Did your dad have a big plot of land to plant veggies ga? My parents used to be a farmers when they were young but since they moved to the urban area, they stopped growing any veggies la.
The intention for me to plant veg is I can have those 'chinese veg' to eat even if I can't go to the chinese grocery shop! U know the chinese grocery shop is not near my home and sometimes those chinese veg can be quiet expensive!!!!

hor hor hor I have never bought a shark's fin melon from a shop! The melons I ate were always home planted! So i don't know if the taste is different if bought from a shop! I think for Shark's fin melon, it is better to have a plot of land to grow on, u know melons are big and they grow just on the ground! So they do occupy some space!

the one we planted is same taste as the ones we buy from shop, just I don't like the taste, nothing wrong with the melon.
If you like it, try to plant it, it isn't difficult. but as Riko said, beware of slugs and snails, they love fruits and melons! Have to put some slugs and snails powder near the plants.

Yeah, agree! Planting 魚翅瓜 is very popular among the Chinese here as I received some from my neighbour's parents too! I haven't tried 魚翅瓜 in HK and my neighbour told me to make soup with it. So I tried to use it to make soup with turkey leg and pork.

And, there is raspberry and strawberry in my backyard. I dunno who planted them but there was plenty of raspberry in summer. I tried to collect some to make raspberry cake on my first year here. Then we just leave them there afterward. As I'm not interested in planting, I didn't really take care of my garden.... hee... hee....

How do you control the slug? I still haven't found an effective method to control/kill them! I really hate them. Don't say I am cruel but whenever I see them on my veg, I will put a lot of salt on them!!!!!!!

Pak Choi, Kai Lan's seeds were from my 99. My 99 told me to leave some 'choi' to let them grow very old (not eating these veg) then I can get the seeds out from these old veg. I tried last summer but still haven't got a lot of seeds. So still I have to rely on my 99 to supply me.
I think Pak Choi is very easy to grow, the only thing is to watch the slug. U can try pak choi!

I think Shark's fin melon is so tasty wor, why don't u like it lei?
But when I cooked it, I hated to remove the seeds as it seemed like it always had million seeds there!!! But once it is cooked, I think it is quite sweet and I can taste its freshness, too!
If I asked my 99 about how to plant veg to ask for some tips, she will then start criticise me the ways I grow veg la. :(

I won't say you are cruel becos I understand how terrible the slugs and snails are. Same as you la, put lots of salts on veggie, around the plants as well. You can buy slugs powder from B&Q and Homebase as well. Have you noticed after rainning, even more slugs ga, so have to take extra after raining.

I am not interested in planting or looking after the garden, either. But I can't bear the garden looks untidy, so end up taking care of it. And if I want to eat fresh 'Chinese veg' then I have to plant it lor!
