Re: Any mother is living in USA now - Part ll

helloruby:
One of my sister put her kids' chinese names as their middle names too, her husband is a very traditional CHINESE too :-P
I am afraid if I let my son pee in the bottle/cup, he will ask for that frequently. We have let him pee on the grass actually just one time and he was bugging us that he has to go everytime when he see the grass
When do you decide to come back to US?

Haydenmama:
Well, is true in way, there are rich and poor citizens in every country gar la, but I guess in US, we have a better government system. People have all kind of assistant programs for them to apply if they are qualified but I have to admit, there are dozens of people who are abusing the system too, like some people (don't want to mention color), they just keep on giving birth but not working and apply all liked of benefits, :-x :-x c'mon, who is paying for them, WE, of course, working hard and pay out all the tax money :-x so they can stay home and do nothing!
Sometimes, I think let's switch, I want do nothing and get paid too. heheheehehe

whalebb:
Waiting for your good new la,

oscar:
There are chinese tour agencies who do that kind of service too, is like the package, it includes the hotel, transportation, (they come to the hotel and pick up and drop off at the attraction place, took you guys back to the hotel at the end of the days. ) sometimes, they paid for the admission fees to the attractions places too.
Let me try to PM you some of the phone numbers of the travel agencies (chinese) who do that kind of service.
If you just wanted to book the hotel yourself, you can try the expedia.com they have a pretty good deal on hotels.

Re: Any mother is living in USA now - Part ll

Hi all mom,

I will fly to SF next Wednesday. I am quite nervious. Can my husband and I handle all problems which make from my two monsters in the plane?I haven't told you that I have two monsters. The elder daughter is 3.5years old and the younger son is 2 years old. They like playing all time. It is quite difficult for them to sit on the chair for two minutes.

I hope I have a nice life in USA.

Re: Any mother is living in USA now - Part ll

CUTIE_MOMMY,

We havn't make up our mind when to come back to US yet. There are too many things to be considered. My husband want our kids at least finish junior high in Hong Kong, because he doesn't want them forget all the Chinese they learned, so I want my eldest daughter come first because the other two kids are still young, but my husband doesn't want to leave her alone in US. He want the whole family move together. Well, my eldest daughter is not doing well in school. I am afraid she may not be able to go to a good secondary school (not famous school, just good 校風 is enough). In that case, I would send her back to US 3 years later, much earlier than we plan.

Re: Any mother is living in USA now - Part ll

Helloruby:
So, your older daughter is 9 years old now? I think the best timing for the kids to come here is between 9-12, in this way, they have some knowledge of chinese already and is not late to start them the style of american edcuation in here. I know people always said," well, is easy for children to get used to the environment" but tell you the truth, I really do think is depends on individual. To me, as long as my son speaks and understands chinese, it will be good enough, cuz, I can read chinese but not good at writing myself either. My hubby is even worst, he can't really read chinese much. Don't leave her in US by herself, she is too young for that and is especially girl, you better watch her closely, which the gals in US got mature way early than you think. :-P

suecheung:
So is this the first time you are coming to the states? Or you are just returned here? Good luck with everything, I know is a hassle to take kids for a long flight, I guess just bring extra toys and extra snacks with you. I have a 2 year old son too, I know is very embrassing when the kid is not under control. hehehehhe but I read an article and said, don't worry when your kids have the bad behaviors on the plane, people who has kids will understand or just ignored the others cuz you won't see them again anyway, so, who cares, heheheeh. :-P

Wow! You will immigrate into US next Wednesday. Hope everything smoothly and enjoy the new life in US. Pls check PM, I want to talk with you by phone.

Helloruby,
What your husband’s consideration is exactly same as us.

A (澳洲回流)friend’s son (9 yrs.old) who is studying in St. Louis (and hire tutors for him) he wants him to study in Int’l School, but failed, he asked what’s wrong with his son. The foreign examiner explained to him that his English oral is OK, but writing cannot pass. The teacher also said even the famous school in HK, English cannot chase. You see the教師英文評核試, HK people don’t believe the Government’s Education System, the rich peoples always let their kids to the Int’l School, it’s difficult to enter now.
This remind him to send their daughter (13 yrs old) to Australia - leave her alone for studying. And their daughter was agree, she told their parent that so many classmates already went to the overseas for studying.
So, I ask my husband if he can leave our daughter alone in US when she is 13, he said no, we need our whole family to live together.

Re: Any mother is living in USA now - Part ll

CUTIE_MOMMY ,

Yes, my eldest daughter is 9 years old now. US girls get mature so early that's the situation I'm afraid I can't handle. :-(

jaan,
International school in Hong Kong is not that international now because too many domestic student enter the school, right?

One thing my husband and I both agree is my daughter will definately return to US for grade 12, so it would be easier for her to enter good university.

suecheung:
I'm so happy for your new move. I miss the days in US.

Re: Any mother is living in USA now - Part ll

whalebb,

We haven't make our decision yet because there are so many variables in the decision; the disappointed government, the stupid education policy, the job of my husband, my daughter's school, etc. So I really can't say when we will return
We think they will catch up English very fast when they go to school in US. We have seen many international students doing well in English so we are not too worry about their English. But, I did see some Hong Kong students in LA, they can hardly speak and understand English because they just talk to their group of students. What a pity! So, may be we will choose a school without any Chinese in it for our kids. Then they will learn. :-P

Well, I do have a question. We always thinking to spend a summer in US and want our kids go to summer school there. Do you gals know where can I get some information?

Re: Any mother is living in USA now - Part ll

helloruby,
I agreed with cuties mommy between the age of 9-12 is a good age to send the children to study aboard. I believe the earlier the better, I came to study here, when I was 13 (eight grade) and I had a real hard time fitting in at the time. By the time you are in middle school or high school, the children had already establish their group of friends. It is hard for new comer to fit in, never the less to say a non-english speaking person. The kids are the higher grade lever can be more cruel and rude to new comer!

I think the ideal age is about 10 or 11, fifth or six grader, that way you still be able to make friends with the kid who will be your middle school's class mate. You won't felt so lonely and left out, when you had already establish a group of friends and it is easier to adapt the middle school environment. Do you have family live in the state? Maybe you can first send your daughter to stay with them first?!

The local community school offer classes for the summer, beside the basic reading, writing and math, they also offer some fun classes like cooking, gymanstic...etc!

Re: Any mother is living in USA now - Part ll

helloruby:
like whalebb and cutie_mommy said, it is not the best to just send the kids alone in the US. I saw some parents did that, and the kids all hang out with bad people. :-( and waste their parents' money.

I came to the US after F.5 to attend high school. It is a good time to come over. Be sure your kid can adjust to the change in culture and English. At first it took me couple months to get used to the speed of the conversation here.

Summer schools... you can go online to check some out, they tend to be expensive US$1500 range for 1 week or two weeks.

or you can send them to community college here for a class or something if they are old enough.

Re: Any mother is living in USA now - Part ll

Thanks for all you gals opinions. I have more reasons to talk to my husband about this now. Sometimes, movies about US highschool do scare me. I'm worry kids will pick on her, can she fit in the school......... many many things. I want she return ASAP. We don't have any relative in US. I can only think of a friend in San Diego. So, I am thinking to find a school in San Diego and may be my friend can help me to take care of her.

Re: Any mother is living in USA now - Part ll

ym: did you apply for I-485? your daughter is US citizen so you can apply for a "greencard" - resident alien status. Then you can stay in the US as long as you want. If you are on a travel visa, you can extend your visa while you are in the US, that can allow you to stay for up to one year.

helloruby: the high school in the US is not that bad, the movie is not close to real life. Just make sure your kid attends a good school district and it will be okay. If you plan to send your kid to high school grade 12, you can have your friend host for a year and then your kid can go to college then. by the time, they should be able to take care of themselves.
