Yes I did. But I contacted the hotel directly and explained to them my situation. They agreed not to charge me the deposit. This kind of online agent just pass our info to the hotel for handling, all the charge, include deposit, and cancellation charge, are handled by the hotel, not the online website.

Well, the type of booking I made was free cancellation upto a date. I requested cancellation online after that deadline. So in my case, there wasn't any money involved at the time of booking. As far as I heard and know, it's hotel that handled the charge. You talk to booking.com and see if what they said are consistent with the hotel. It may be booking.com has already , if booking.com said it's the hotel that manage the charge , then you know what happened....
