But I have seen petrol stations in Australia where they don't have any staff at the station, which means that you have to pay using your credit card.

Just one reminder, don't mix up gasoline and diesel. I have a friend mixed up these two and injected the wrong one into the car. He has to pay damages to the car to the car rental company. So, be careful!
