thanks! so which means i don't need to renew in advanced... i can renew for him before his travelling (even if expired)? How long does it take until i can get the new passport?

However, the complexity of routine verifications and security checks may leads to longer processing times.
Children Canadian passports are valid for a maximum period of 5 years from the date of issuance. The passports only contain 36 pages. You can submit an application to renew your passport if:
current passport has expired or will expire within 12 months of the expiry date
if all visa pages are full
if you wish to replace your current passport with the new epassport
