1) i use vivid mode ( colourful ) all time
2) Sharpness set at least 6.
The default color and sharpness not sharp and not colorfull.

I've used the D300 for almost 6 months before upgrading to D700. From my little experience with the machine, it's already quite sharp & nice & fast by default; my only complaint is that the colour tends to be a bit yellowish & strong (as compare to my old D200).
D300 uses a different colour moding system, which I was always having trouble with. Try downloading the 3 extra sets of colour modes from the Nikon website: Portrait, Landscape & D2Xmode1. Many people found that these colour settings perform better than the original 4 came from the box.
If you are shooting young children most of the time, try using the Portrait or D2Xmode 1, which will give you a much better skin tone.
