家住荃灣, 想請問附近(荃灣至長沙灣,地鐵沿線)有無大人返慕道班, 小朋友返兒童主日學 (3.5 years old)的天主教教會?

Me too! I myself is a Catholic and I am looking for a Sunday school for my 3.5 yrs old kids. We live near Choi Hung. However, I have not found one yet.

I asked two churches near my place, and they both admit older kids, e.g. 4 yrs old. The tutors seemed not very friendly, and told me that even when she turns 4, she may not be admitted due to limited quota. They suggested me bringing her to mass first. I tried, and found that an hour of sitting down in the mass is still too much for her, especially she knows nothing about it. Won't it be more logical to prepare her in the Sunday school first then go to mass? The tutors seemed not to think so.

I saw banners outside a Christian church and their Sunday school can start as young as 2. Anyone knows of any Catholic church doing that?

Won't it be more logical to prepare her in the Sunday school first then go to mass?

biolko,

Sunday school and Mass are two different things.

Most Catholic churches provides Sunday schools for children starting P.1, some for K3; only a few will have Sunday school for nursery kids. The church I am attending have one starting K2.

Sunday school for lower grade students mostly are introducing God, our Lord, and Jesus Christ, and other famous hero to them by reading stories from the Bible. The tutorial material will help them to relate daily life with God and His teachings and and let them remember we are children of God, etc. The meaning of Mass will only be taught at P.3 or above. As such, there is no logic that a child should attend Sunday school before attending a Mass. Just for your information, under 指引of the Roman Catholic Church, children under 6 need not attend Mass (not a sin), though it is encourage to do so. Under such circumstances, we still urge parents should bring young kids to Church if they can as early as possible.

Moreover, in normal practice, every student of Sunday School would attend Mass with their parents after the tutorial session. You still have to bring along your child to attend Mass with you, anyway.

I bring my child to Mass when he was a baby. Of course he won't have the patience at all. Just find a seat that he can see what the altar is going on, when seeing him losing interest to the altar, I whispered in his ears to explain to him what was happening once in a while. Most of the time when he cannot sit down anymore, I will bring him to the back of the Church standing or walk around, stilling attending the Mass. It is a hard time to overcome, and we, parents, cannot concentrate in the Mass for at least 2 - 3 years. However, I think it is worthy. By the time he was 3 years old, he can stay calmly for half of the Mass, and then enjoy his way in Church but not causing nuisance to others.

By the way, don't be angry for the word "quota". As I know that some districts have a huge demand for Sunday School, however, the Church might not have enough volunteer to teach and also they might not have enough classrooms as well. Therefore, seats are reserved for the priority of the children to prepare for "Communion" and "Confirmation".
