My son is four years old and was tested as a gifted child in January 2009. When I learned the IQ Test Report and noted that he is gifted, I was half happy and half worry. If your child is gifted, you should know how I feel.

I recently note that it seems that my son does not wanna play with and make friends with his peers at school. He likes to play by himself. As to his interests, he likes drawing very much and draws everyday. I enrolled him to piano classes and he refuses to participate to any group activities at all. I am a working mother and don't have a lot of time to spend with him during the day at home. So, I am now looking around for some activities where he can join in with a group of kids of his age, hopefully more activities like this could encourage him to make friends and participate more in a group.

Would there be any mums who have the same or similar problems I have? Please come in and share? Many thanks.

Do your son like to play with older kids? Some gifted children do not like to play with others because they are smarter than the other kids the same ages. They usually have a lot of questions to ask and they seem to learn faster than the others which make them bored. However, I have seen smart kids like to hang out with adults or older kids because they can get different answers and point of views.

Also, if your son likes drawing, let him develop more on that. You can add more elements on it, says ask him to describe his feeling through drawing, draw pictures/ cards for other kids or relatives, link drawing with stories and music, teach other kids to draw, etc. Some gifted kids would have emotional problem as they have difficulties to express themselves and to deal with others. To help them out from that, you may want to spend some time with him and find a suitable stand for him amongst the other kids.

Where did your son take the test ? Do they have professionals who could give you advice? I know that the government are developing programmes for gifted students (secondary level). I don't know if there's any such kind of programme for small kids. You may also talk to your son's teachers in kindergarten. Though they may not do anything special for your son, they should play more attention to his behaviour especially in group activities. Some gifted children have emotional problems and they have many troubles in schools. Do give more encouragement to your son in drawing and anything he's particularly interested.

Mine is tested as Gifted by Heep Hong. He has just turned 3 yrs old. He was referred to have IQ test because he has all kinds of problems in school. Like yours, he does not play with his classmates, day dream, extremely sensitive to comments, etc. He likes drawing too. He logical reasoning is extraordinary strong. I totally understand how you feel. Let's keep in touch. I want know my son's coming path from your experience.
