Has anybody applied for the visitor visa to visit China from the Chinese Embassy in SF? Is it easy?

My husband applied through a travel agency. It doesn't seem difficult to apply by yourrself but you do need to go early to wait in line. That's why he'd rather pay a small fee to the travel agency to take care for him.

Thanks mrschao!
Did your husband also use the travel agency to book the ticket? Do you know any travel agencies which offer cheap tickets from SF to HK? I don't know if it is better/cheaper to buy tickets through travel agencies or directly buy from the airline...

AKW,
The process is not complicated. You can download the application form online, fill it out and bring it to the embassy for application. The website is http://www.chinaconsulatesf.org/eng/qianzhen/
But true, you may need to go there early and wait in line. I heard that the wait can be hours but I hold a HKID so that I don't have to deal with it.

For tickets, I buy it directly from the airline's website as I have full control of the timing and the cost. Usually, I travel at non-peak season and I wait for the promotion. If you would like to buy package, tickets + hotel stay, going to the travel agent would help you to find good deal. I have bought tickets + hotel package a few years ago in Chinatown (on Kearny Street) but I have forgotten the name of the agency. The owner found me a good deal plus she refunded me some money after she could find a cheaper package. I can check the name of the agency later this week if I get a chance.

When would you plan to go to HK? To avoid the holiday crowd and expensive charge, you'd better leave before Dec 1 as airline company will raise the price on Dec 1. The difference can be $300-$400 easy.

Thanks rose-mag for your info!
My husband got his chinese visa in HK last time. We just thought it might save us some time to get the chinese visa in SF (if the wait is not too long). But I just found out that the fees for the visa are very different -- US$130 in SF vs. HK$150 in HK!! I can't believe it.

I don't need to book hotel, so I guess I can just search for tickets on different airlines' websites. I'm planning to visit HK during Chinese New Year next year. I know it's still early, but CNY is the peak season in HK and China and my family needs to book the tickets from HK to China for us. So we need to book tickets here first. I haven't celebrated CNY in HK for 9 years...

As far as I know, the fee depends on the passport (nationality), not the location where you apply for the visa. The US$130 in SF is based on you are holding a US passport.

If you are applying the visa using a US passport in HK, the fee is HK$1020. Reference to this webpage:
http://www.fmcoprc.gov.hk/eng/zgqz/blsjfy/

Hope this helps.

Oh, thanks a lot mrschao!!
I looked at that webpage before, but didn't scroll down to see the fee particularly for America. Then, there is no price difference to get the visa in SF or HK. That makes more sense.
Thanks again :)

You're welcome.
My husband just asked the travel agency to apply the visa for him. He didn't buy air-ticket from them. The service charge is $20, but he doesn't need to go all the way to SF (we live on the East Bay) and no need to wait for hours in line.
