it happened to me when my baby was sick last week. I have to wake up 8 times at night, i was really frustrated by that time la..Bc before my baby can sleep through the night. I guess it maybe due to the fact that he is sick & teething problem.
And on the day he almost recovered..I was too kind to hug and put him to bed.. And everytime i put him to bed, he woke up and cry. And it happend over 4 times and it took me over 30 mins. My back really hurts!!! and I was quite angry that time. and i told baby: u now will go to sleep by yourself la..I wouldn't hug u anymore". And then, he had cried over 40 mins and fall asleep himself la.. AND REALLY unexpectedly, he can sleep through the night without crying at all. And after that day. HE IS doing great.
Fortunately he is doing fine now..Sometimes he did scream a bit, but he is able to sooth himself to sleep. So i hope all ur babies can train to sooth himself to sleep too.
i told myself: either u die, or i die la!! Really can't help if i can't get enough sleep at night, bc i have to take care baby all day long, soo tiring la!!!
And my method is: in my case, since i'm sleeping in the same bed with baby, i will listen to MP3 la, after one song (about 3-4) mins, i will check on baby. By listening to songs, u can no longer to listen baby cry..Yeah, hearing them cry is crazily disturbing. Even now, i'm training baby to nap in the afternoon, i will listen to pop music loudly, so that his crying is not that LOUD la..And today, it took him 5 mins crying for nap time, i keep on playing the music , and luckily , he is able to sooth himself to sleep. And usually he just sleeps for 30 mins for nap!

Thanks for your tips, but it is very hard to ignore the crying...but I guess I have to try....otherwise, I will die soon
haha, that's also a good method...I usually leave the room and let him cry for 5 mins, then check again...but usually I have to hug him in the end to make him sleep; otherwise, he will keep crying for an hour!
My son usually sleeps for 45mins to 1.5 hours in each afternoon nap.
