My son also starts his swimming lesson from July. At the very beginning, he was very happy. However, when the coach asked him to put his head into the water. he drank the water and cried (1st lesson). From then, every Saturday was a hard day for us. He refused to go but we insisted. Last Saturday, we talked to the coach and he said kids are like this, gradually will be better.
My husband and I decided to let him to continue (2 months), we don't want him to give up so easily. Actually, when we bring him to swimming ourselves, he enjoyed a lot.
Wilsonmama,
My son likes to go to the swimming lesson very much.
I think maybe my son's coach is really good, she doesn't scold him, and always praises him, and says he has improved after each lesson. My hubby and I always find something to praise him, telling him that he has improved a lot, he is very brave, he is doing very well etc. we also praise him in front of the relatives.
For the first 8-10 lessons, my son held on to his coach like a koala. (we paid to have him soaking in the water!). His coach broke down the steps, first just asked him to blow bubbles in the water, and only lately, seeing that he is more confident, gently push his head down.
When the coach told my hubby that my son drank some water, my hubby told the coach and my son that this was expected when we start learning to swim. Then we praised our son very hard that he was brave enough to continue.
In short, praise him all the time, find something to praise him even if there seems no progress. hope these are helpful to you.
I think it really depends on the age of the student. For 3+ child, some may not have very mature coordination of body, besides he also has to be confident and not afraid of the water.
Normally they will teach you the breast stroke first.
Reason :The technique of floating yourself("stepping in water") in deep water is similar to breast stroke
