I am also a SLE patient for over 10 years, I would like to ask you some questions if you don't mind:
- did you ask your doctor when / before you were pregnant that whether your kid will get SLE from you?
- will you do anything test to see if your kid will have SLE too?
Actually, I did ask my doctors (both family doctor, obs &gyn specialist and the rheu. specialist) before i had my babies, all of them told me that SLE is not a genetic diease. Since my sickness was under good control and really stable at that time, my husband and I decided to have our baby, eventually, our 2 girls were born in 04 and 05.
However, when I returned to public hospital for regular check-up for SLE last week, one Medical staff there told me that some previous studies had shown that SLE might be genetically linked. I started to afriad now - whether my girls will become sick. I am so scared that I kept looking up from the internet and did find some article supporting the fact that SLE is genetical.
I am really frightened, what should I do and what will you do?
from what I know, SLE is not a genetic discease which will pass to your offspring. It's something related to immune system which may result from some genetic mutation.
The test for SLE (e.g. ANA, anit-DNA, anti-ENA) is not for "predicting" the disease. The disease is commonly occure after 20s, and it's suggested that, it may due to random mutation. but is there any hidden "hints" for the disease? I think you better ask the specialist who tell you this. That will be an advance testing for a special genetic "code" at specific site. So, you cant have it be tested in private settings.
btw, I am afraid you cant do anything for that.
in theory, preventive measure is somewhat like preventing cancer.. i.e. prevent for mutation. some may have SLE in early age, transplantation using self cord blood (or others) may help. Cases are not from local area.
Fortunately you and your family are not SLE patients, to my surprise, you know so much about SLE.
yes, that's what i heard from various medical practioners that SLE is not genetic before i had my girls, however, it seems that there are more and more cases / findings show that SLE does have some genetic linkages. That's my conconcern. For sure, I don't want my girls to "Inherit" such rubbish from me, but if they are really carrying some SLE markers, I think knowing it earlier is better than later.
anyway, thanks again for your kind and informative reply.
