my daughter is now 9-month-old, she doesn't like congee, she has about 1/3 bowl or just a spoonful per day, but she likes cereal more.
I don't add any salt to the congee, do u?
And what kinds of food can a 9-month-old baby (with only 2 teeth just coming out)?
Hi hollyfong,
Baby's main source of calories and nutrients are from breastmilk or baby formula up till 12 months.
Baby cereal is as good as congee, even more nutritious if eating on its own! If your baby likes cereal, then let her enjoys it. You may add in mashed cooked egg yolk, minced meat, pureed fruit and vegetables, (one kind of new food at a time, a 5-7 days apart) into the cereal so that she can try different types of new solid food taste and texture.
Have you given any finger foods to her yet? She can practice the pincer grasp this way and have fun feeding herself.
Example of finger foods are:
1) Well-cooked (steamed is better than boiled, without loosing nutrients in boiliing water) vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans and peas. They must be cut into pea size and soft so that you can cut it up with a fork to avoid choking. Even with only two teeth, your baby can still grind food and practice chewing on solid food with her gums!
2) Soft and ripe fruits like pears, banana, water melon, papaya, peaches, avocados, kiwi fruit, plus tiny pieces of cooked & peeled apple.
3) Bite-size O-shaped oats cereal like Cheerios.
4) Tiny pieces of tender chicken, and bread (preferrable whole grain bread).
Don't add in salt or sugar as she doesn't need these at this young age. Let her enjoy the true and natural flavours of food!
Once my son has tasted adult solid food (without seasoning) at age 11 months, there is no way back and he doesn't want no more pureed baby food. He loves munching on pieces of meat, fruits and veggies!
Hope this helps!:-P
Thanks for your suggestion. Holly likes bread. And i give her bread and apple sauce for breakfast. She enjoys them.
She doesn't like finger biscuit, I do give tiny pieces of bread to her. Yet, she seems to be so lazy even does not want to hold her bottle milk. She held it when she is one month old, but not now!! She rejects milk except when she is sleepy. The three bottles of milk are given for her snaps and evening sleep.... ai.... Don't know why she hates formula milk so much.
Should i give her peanut butter with bread or wait till later?
My son started to hold his bottle all of a sudden when he starts to crawl, around 7-8 months.
I don't plan to introduce any kind of nut/ nut product, like peanut / peanut butter, walnut... until my son turns 3 yrs old, to prevent allergies to nuts, which could be severe and last a whole life.
Cheerios has minimal amount of sugar in it. comparing to other types of adult cereal, so it is recommened for babies and most importantly, it doesn't pose choking hazards. Could you get Heinz Nutrios in local stores? It is even better than Cheerios, same look but fortified with iron.
