Ain't sure ur kids' age but if babyseat or booster seat is required, Japanese rental company will count these seats to take up 1.5 normal seats' space. Thus, 8 seaters vehicle won't be usable.
Unless rental company would turn a blind eye (which is unlikely), u r either stcuk with renting a 10 seater bus (international divers permit class D required) or renting two vehicles.
